Proudly known as Rosie the lunch lady
WATERTOWN- It is with profound sadness that the family of Rose Josephine (Spallone) Macchi, age 102 of Watertown, share news of her peaceful passing on Monday, January 20, 2025 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved widow of Bill Macchi to whom she was married for 40 years.
Rose was born on March, 18, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Dominic and Antoinette (Sapatino) Spallone. Her family then moved to New York and grew up in the Bronx. Rose worked for over twenty years for the Watertown School System in the school cafeterias and was affectionally known as "Rosie" the lunch lady. Rose loved working with the children so much she returned to work at the age of 80 as a lunchroom monitor at Hemingway Park School. She worked there for an additional five years before officially retiring. Rose was always a star on the dance floor, dancing any chance she got, whenever there was music playing. She loved her scratch tickets, and played her "numbers" every day. She watched the New York Yankees religiously, always coaching the team from the couch. Rose will be deeply missed by all those who were blessed to love and know her.
Left to honor her memory are her children: William Jr. of Chesterfield, NH, Valerie Macchi of Watertown, CT with whom she made her home and was also her primary caregiver, and Philip and his wife Marianne of Oakville, CT. Rose also leaves her two grandchildren; Heather of Stowe, VT, and Steven of Oakville, CT. She was predeceased by her siblings; Emilo Spallone, Frank Spallone, Grace Farino, Mary Laudanno, and Helen Minners.
The family would like to extend their immense gratitude to the hospice team of nurses and aides at Trinity Health at Home the compassionate care and love they shared with Rose and her family.
Funeral services for Mrs. Macchi will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 12:15 p.m. at Casey- O'Neill Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 742 Main Street, Oakville, CT.
