Rosemary Hilton Obituary

Rosemary Diane Hilton passed away peacefully at her home in Webster City, Iowa, on October 21, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 83. Rosemary courageously faced Multiple Sclerosis for more than 50 years of her life, and through it all, she remained strong, resilient, and full of grace. Her illness never kept her down, and she continued to live a life filled with purpose.

Rosemary Sande was born on May 6, 1942, in Roland, Iowa, to Raymond and Maxine Sande. Rosemary grew up on a farm just west of town and attended school in Roland. She met Dave Hilton, during her senior year of high school and together they began their journey at Luther College in 1960. Rosemary graduated in 1964 with a degree in Elementary Education. That same year, on June 6, she married Dave, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span more than six decades.

Rosemary’s passion for teaching led her to a fulfilling 39-year career in Webster City, where she touched countless lives with her warmth and patience. She also earned her master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, further deepening her commitment to education and her community.

In 1971, Rosemary and Dave welcomed their first daughter, Kristin Elizabeth, followed by Kari Rebecca in 1974. Family was the heart of Rosemary’s world. As the second oldest of six kids, she remained close to her brothers and sisters throughout her life, sharing many adventures together—from a memorable trip to Norway to an Alaskan cruise, and countless trips to Branson, Missouri. Branson became a cherished tradition; a place filled with laughter and memories for her children and grandchildren alike.

Until the passing of her parents, Sunday afternoons and holidays were spent at the family farm in Roland. These gatherings created joy and tradition—moments that became treasured memories for the entire family.

Rosemary and Dave also shared a love for travel. When their children were young, they made several road trips to Southern California to visit Dave’s parents. After retirement, they explored the U.S. on some guided tours, took a magical trip to Disney and Mexico with all their grandchildren, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a Hawaiian cruise, also with their children and grandchildren. They also enjoyed many special trips with dear family friends during the early years of raising their daughters.

Rosemary found joy in the simple pleasures—summer days at the ball fields cheering on Lynx softball, supporting Dave as a coach and her daughters as players. That same joy continued as she watched her grandchildren grow and thrive in their own sports and activities. Her presence was a constant source of encouragement and love.

After retiring in 2003, Rosemary remained active in the community, volunteering at the hospital and continuing to give of herself in quiet, meaningful ways. She was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she worshipped regularly until her health no longer allowed. She had been part of the congregation since 1964. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dave Hilton; her daughters Kristin Hilton of Des Moines, IA, and Kari Draeger (Tracy) of Johnston, IA; and her grandchildren Jacob and Kira Draeger of Johnston, and Emerson and Asher Hilton-Steinmann of Des Moines. She is also survived by her siblings Judy Tungesvik (Carroll) of Boone, Kathy Quam of Ankeny, Dennis Sande (Diane) of Charles City, and Debbie Nelson of Ankeny, along with many nieces and nephews.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Maxine Sande, and her oldest brother, Gary Sande (Deanna) of St. Paul, MN.

Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched—as a teacher, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her unwavering love, and the joy she brought to those around her.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025 at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Rosemary’s memory to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1229 Kathy Lane, Webster City, IA 50595 or Treasured Hearts Home Care, PO Box 786, Webster City, IA 50595.
