Roy Eugene Guess, age 81, passed away on January 31, 2026, in
Jasper, Georgia. He was born in
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Roy was a proud graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he earned a degree in art- an identity he carried with him throughout his life. Though his career took him into the corporate world, he always thought of himself first and foremost as an artist.
He spent many years in the floor covering industry, serving as Vice President of Product Development and Design for several respected companies, including Trend, Salem, Bigelow, Burlington, and ultimately Mannington, from which he retired. His work blended creativity with leadership, and he was widely respected for his eye for design, integrity, and dedication to excellence.
Roy also served his country after being drafted during the Vietnam War escalation, where he worked as a topographer in the United States Army. He maintained lifelong friendships with his Army buddies, Joe Geoghegan and Mike Dabrowski.
After retirement, Roy returned fully to his artistic roots. He found joy in creating beautiful works of art from found objects and especially loved painting guitars, transforming them into one-of-a-kind pieces. He shared his creativity at local festivals, including the Ellijay Apple Festival. Generous by nature, if someone admired his work but could not afford it, Roy would simply give it to them- believing that art was meant to be shared, not withheld.
Above all else, Roy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who worked hard to provide for his family. His love, work ethic, humility, and creativity leave a lasting legacy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Guess and Sarah Elizabeth Guess.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret Guess; his daughter, Diana Guess; his son, Benjamin Guess; his grandchildren, Sarah Raines, Maxwell Guess, and Josselyn Guess; his sister, Elizabeth Finlay; his brother, G. Perry Guess; and his twin brother, Ray Guess.
Services for the family will be held at a later date, when Roy's ashes will be spread alongside his surviving wife's ashes by their children on a mountaintop overlooking a green valley-a place of peace, beauty, and reflection befitting the life they shared.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roy's memory to the Calhoun Gordon Arts Council in support of the arts he loved. Donations can be made at .
A life well lived
