Roy Cliffton Letterlough, Sr., age 86, passed away peacefully on September 2nd, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 30, 1937, to the proud parents Lanie and Ludella Maness Letterlough in Randolph County. Roy's life was filled with adventure, resilience, and a deep love for his family.
During his early years, Roy attended Randolph County Schools and found solace in his faith at Stout's Chapel United Methodist Church. His spiritual journey was an important part of his life.
As an adult, Roy ventured to Freeport
Long Island, New York, where he embarked on a remarkable journey as an entrepreneur. He established and operated an auto repair business, leaving a lasting mark in his community. For many years, he dedicated himself to his craft, earning the respect and admiration of those who sought his expertise.
In 2018, Roy made the heartfelt decision to relocate to Gaston, North Carolina, to be closer to his family as his health declined. Despite the challenges he faced, Roy remained resilient and continued to find joy in the simple pleasures of life.
Roy had a zest for life that was truly infectious. He cherished spending time with his family and friends, often embarking on fishing trips and exciting outings. However, his true passion lay in the world of racing, where he found his calling. A source close to the family, who wishes to remain anonymous, once quipped that Roy may have held the record for the worst driving record in the entire state of New York-a testament to his unwavering passion for the thrill of the race.
Roy was preceded in death by his beloved son, Dwayne Letterlough, as well as his siblings Laura Letterlough, Terry Letterlough, and Fredrick Letterlough. Although they have gone before him, their memories live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
He is survived by a loving family who will forever hold him close in their hearts: children, Curtis Letterlough of
Raleigh, NC, Roy Letterlough, Jr. of Gaston, NC, Renee' L. James of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Sharon Pharr of
Tampa, FL, and Tim Fuller of
Big Lake, MN; one sister, Jewel Lockett (Bill) of
Augusta, GA; one brother, Elvin Letterlough (Ann) of Robbins, NC; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Roy's memory will forever be etched in the minds and hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, adventure, and a deep love for family. As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember the joy he brought to our lives and the inspiration he provided through his journey.
Roy Cliffton Letterlough, Sr. will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
