Roy was the third child of Earl E. and Alma C. (Martins) Middaugh. During his grade school and high school years Roy attended 16 different schools in numerous states. His father worked for a bridge building company and the family moved frequently. Eventually Roy lived with and worked for a farmer during high school so he could remain in one school and he graduated from Lewis High School with the Class of 1948. Following graduation, Roy went to work as a brick mason with Eagen Construction Company in Exira, Iowa. He met Margery Brown while she was employed as a clerk in the Audubon County courthouse. The couple was married on October 28, 1950, at Oakhill Lutheran Church in rural Brayton, Iowa. They first made their home in Audubon and later Brayton. Roy entered the Marine Corps on November 14, 1951, and served his time as a carpenter based in San Francisco, California. He achieved the rank of corporal. While he was stationed there, he and Margery had their first child Steven. Upon his separation from service in November 1953, the family moved to Brayton and later to rural Atlantic, Iowa. Roy was employed by Clyde Keith Construction where he continued his work as a mason. It was during these years in Cass County that Rhonda and Bruce were born. When Roy was hired as an architectural inspector for Buettler and Associates, Sioux City, Iowa, he and Margery moved their family to Glidden in 1962, preferring the small-town environment. Roy's job took him to many parts of northwest Iowa where he was involved with commercial projects such as hospitals and schools and also local Carroll projects. Following this employment he also worked briefly for Shriver Construction in Jefferson and as a salesman for Schroeder Siding in Carroll. Roy had a strong work ethic which he passed on to his children. He took great pride in his home and yard and enjoyed decorating it for the holidays. He could be seen scraping and painting the siding on the house and garage, working off scaffolding past the age of 90. His yard was immaculate. Working on the weight machines at the Carroll Rec Center enabled him to remain strong and independent, plus he enjoyed the camaraderie. Roy was an avid golfer in his younger days and he and Marge enjoyed playing in tournaments. He also relished a good game of cards at the Carroll Country Club. Roy was a fan of Tiger Woods, enjoyed a good Manhattan, and spent his free time reading westerns and titles by Grisham and Baldacci. His favorite activity was fishing, especially trips to Canada, Oregon, Minnesota and Tennessee with friends and family. Middaugh family vacations were exclusively for fishing. Roy was a 75-year member of the Merle Hay American Legion in Glidden. He also served on the Glidden Library Board. He and Marge were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Glidden. Roy's legacy will live on through his children Steven (Nancy) Middaugh, Rhonda (David "Barney") Schroeder, and Bruce Middaugh; his granddaughters Kristine (Arvind Karwan) Middaugh and Katie (Drew) Riemersma; four step-grandchildren Suzanne Dillon, Amie Neal, Jessica (Conan) Jakes and Alex Schroeder; great-granddaughter Lydia; twelve step-great-grandchildren Jordan, Grace, Olivia, Owen, Rylan, Waylan, Eli, Taylor, Thailia, Keenan, Izac and Izabella; a brother-in-law Everett Brown. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Margery Brown Middaugh, brother Glen Middaugh and wife Avis, and sister Marguerite Dunn, brothers- and sisters-in-law Frank Jr. and Marilyn Smith, Earl and Jean Brown, and Louise Brown. Roy and Marge loved the Glidden and Carroll communities and have established the Roy and Margery Middaugh Charitable Foundation to be used for post-high school educational grants for students with a financial need attending college, vocational school or trade school.
