Roy Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wetzel Funeral Home - Hanover on Mar. 2, 2026.
Roy W. Smith, 86, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Homewood at Plum Creek. He was the devoted and loving husband of Verna C. (Powers) Smith, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage built on faith, family, and unwavering commitment.

Born November 10, 1939, in Deep Valley, Pennsylvania, Roy was the son of the late Carl E. and Gail I. (Grim) Smith. He attended school in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Marshall University, earning a degree in Business Administration in 1968.

Roy and Verna made their home in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, where they lived for approximately 30 years while raising their family. During that time, Roy was deeply engaged in both civic and church life. He served as a member of the Bethel Park School Board and was an active leader in the Boy Scouts, mentoring and guiding young men in the community. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge, organizations that reflected his dedication to service and fellowship. Roy was also a faithful member of Mt. Lebanon Christian Church.

His heart for service extended especially to those in need. Roy volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was actively involved with South Hills Interfaith Movement, where he generously provided tax services and financial planning assistance to underprivileged families, using his business background to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

After relocating to Hanover, Roy continued his life of faith and service. He became a member of the Hanover Methodist Church and remained committed to helping others by volunteering with Meals on Wheels in the Hanover community. No matter where he lived, Roy carried with him a servant's heart and a steady commitment to his faith and community.

Roy enjoyed watching all sports and cherished time spent with his family. Above all, he was proud of his sons and especially delighted in his role as grandfather.

In addition to his beloved wife, Verna, Roy is survived by his four sons: Roy W. "Wally" Smith, Jr. and his wife Müge of Milwaukee, WI; Timothy M. Smith and his wife Mimi of Arvada, CO; Andrew K. Smith and his wife Kristen of Bel Air, MD; and Bruce D. Smith and his wife Kristen of San Jose, CA. He is also survived by his sister, Wilma Jean Withers of Point Pleasant, WV; and four cherished grandchildren, Brendan Smith, Corinne Smith, Greta Smith, and Nate Smith.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his siblings: Carl Smith, Jr., Robert E. Smith, George O. Smith, and Grace Crabtree.

A service to celebrate Roy's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Homewood at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA, with Rev. Jeff Shull officiating. A time to share memories with the family will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service in the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lions Clubs International Foundation, Department 4547, Carol Stream, IL 60122-4547.
