She graduated from New Sharon High School with the class of 1949. On December 31, 1949, Ruby was united in marriage to Stanley DeYoung in the United Methodist Parsonage in Oskaloosa. To this union four children were born, Ruth, Carolyn, Dan and David. Ruby wore many hats by being a housewife, keeping the books for Stan's Carpentry business and was an excellent seamstress making many wedding dresses, prom dress and doing alterations over the years. She also made beautiful and delicious wedding cakes and birthday cakes. For many years, she supplied homemade decorated Santa cookies for family, local businesses and for many residents. She will be most remembered by family and friends for her chocolate chip cookies and keeping the cookie jar full and ready for anyone who dropped by.
Ruby enjoyed card games, jig saw puzzles, cooking, baking, and her flower and vegetable gardens. She kept herself busy by canning, and always keeping the cave stocked. Ruby was an excellent quilter and made beautiful quilted hand pieced memories for her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved going out to Union Mills, especially during summers and holidays having the freedom to run and play; and checking out the buildings for any new kitten's grandma might have. Sitting on the crank freezer for a new batch of homemade ice cream on Sundays after church and picking raspberries and wildflowers was also a great memory.
Ruby was very active member of the Union Mills Christian Church serving various positions over the years which included, Secretary and Deaconess. She was also a member of the New Sharon Historical Society and the New Sharon Lions Club.
Her legacy will be honored by her children, Ruth (Keith) Middleton of Pasco, WA, Carolyn Munyon of Noblesville, IN, Dan (Joy) DeYoung of New Sharon and David (Connie) DeYoung of Des Moines; her grandchildren, Kyle (Katherine) Middleton, Lisa (Chris) Middleton-Smith, Sarah (Josh) Minnick, Brad (Kelly) DeYoung, Jacque (Dex Ford) DeYoung, Jeremy (Ann) DeYoung, Carrie (Aaron) Abbas and Cassie (Billy) Formaro; her great grandchildren, Savannah Johnson, Sierra Johnson, Gabbie Minnick, Julia Minnick, Dalton DeYoung, Jordan DeYoung, Delaynie Ford, Elizabeth DeYoung, Emma DeYoung, Ashley DeYoung, Tyler DeYoung, Saylor Abbas, Spenser Abbas, Seth Abbas, Billi Formaro, Zackary Formaro, Chandler Formaro, Carmella Formaro and Vincenzo Formaro; her great-great grandson, Jeffrey Ryan-DeYoung; a sister, Marilyn Schultz; sister-in-law, Norma Gosselink; a brother-in-law, Wendell Schultz along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
