Early morning of February 3, 2025, Ruby Smith, aged 87, left us to be with Kayo and the Lord. She was born to Carlton Greer and Emma Baker Greer on January 21, 1938 in Dickson, Tn. Ruby grew up in Dickson and Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from Cohn High School in 1956 where she played clarinet in the band. She married her high school sweetheart, Kayo Smith, where they had an incredible fifty-two year marriage. She moved around with Kayo when he was stationed in the Army and they settled back in Nashville and had two daughters, Jill and Gina.
Ruby was a stay-at-home mother while the girls were little but then worked at Equitable Ins. Co. for decades until her retirement at 62. Ruby loved to cook, had a great girlfriend group and stayed very involved with Kayo’s golfing friends as well as her daughters’ life events. It was always Kayo and Ruby enjoying life with their daughters and then son in law going to church, golfing trips, family vacations and staying in their beach condo. Ruby really leaned on her son in law when Kayo died, and they held a special bond.
Once her only grandson Bryant, was born, she retired to focus on being an awesome grandmother. Bryant was the star of the show in her eyes, and they loved each other and had so much fun together through the years. Kayo and Ruby always went to his ballgames and picked up Bryant from school.
Ruby was so excited to be able to see her great grandson through the phone hours before she passed away.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Carlton and Emma Greer, husband, Thurman L. Smith Jr, “Kayo”, and her son in law, Tim Fox. She is survived by her daughters Sondra Jill Smith, Gina Fox, grandson Bryant Fox (Courtney) and great grandson, Timothy Ford Fox.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Second Harvest Food Bank or Churches of Christ Disaster Relief.
