Obituary published on Legacy.com by McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory on Feb. 27, 2025.
Ruby Taylor Swords, 94, of Sharpsburg, GA slipped peacefully into heaven on Sunday, February 23, 2025 to meet Jesus and the love of her life Glenn.....after 45 years, dancing in heaven together again! She is survived by their children, Cathy Hoffman, Penny & Ted Brown and Philip & Lorri Swords. Her grandchildren, Tyler Brown, Trent Brown, Jacob Hoffman, Daniel Hoffman, Connor Swords (Kennedy), Annie Swords Spencer (Hartwell), Emmy Swords (Jake) and Reeves Swords; three great-grandchildren-Thompson, Millie Kate and Everly.
Ruby was born on July 7, 1930 to James Madison and Annie Catherine Taylor in Anniston, AL. As a child born in the depression whose daddy died when she was 6 years old, she learned quickly how to work and be responsible for herself and others. She worked with her mother to feed all the farm workers, made chenille bedspreads, just whatever she could find to support her family. She loved and excelled at school and learning; something that stayed with her even to her last days. She sang in school "operettas" and plays, even at the early age of 4 and through her years at Albertville High School in Albertville AL. She was on the Basketball Team and enjoyed extracurricular activities when she could find the time and money. She married Glenn B. Swords on September 5, 1946. Ruby worked to support Glenn while he attended Snead Junior College and the University of Alabama. Whether it was cleaning the bathrooms in the college dorms at Snead or working for the paper company in Tuscaloosa, she always felt that you should bring excellence and integrity to every job. She also had many other occupations which she enjoyed, Travelers Insurance, Rich's Department Store, ABC Pediatrics and J&R Clothing. She worked and played tennis well into her 80's. She was also proud to work the election polls for many years.
Ruby was a stay-at-home mom, sewing, cooking, gardening, and decorating each home as she and Glenn moved frequently with his job in the Baking Industry. She was actively involved volunteering wherever the family moved in church, school and in the community. She spent lots of time driving children to church and school activities, practices, piano lessons and performances. She moved to Coweta County in 1974, when she and Glenn bought a little "farm" in Raymond. After Glenn's death she built a house on Canongate Golf course where she enjoyed playing tennis, gardening and enjoying her neighbors and friends, family and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling to many areas of the U.S. as well as Europe. She continued to play tennis until she was 85 with her "Blitz the Ritz" and Lunch Bunch friends and the Young Guns as she called her "younger" tennis friends. She moved to her little lake cottage in Sharpsburg in her later years where she welcomed friends and family to her favorite spot, her back porch! She was always making a "drop" of sausage cheese balls, pecan pie, banana nut bread and it brought her such joy!
Ruby treasured and loved all of the family and friends in her life and wanted each one to know how important they were in her life well lived and loved and was so very thankful that God placed her in her family in the best country in the world, the United States of America. Our family is so grateful for all of you and especially some very special friends, Sharon, Dan and Tonya who assisted with her care for the past years. We treasure our angel of a nurse, Jan Storms, who we have adopted as family during these past two years of hospice care with Guiding Light.
