Russell Gail Griffitts, age 78, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away on April 16, 2025. He was born on July 30, 1946, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to Wilbur Gail Griffitts and Ola Mae (Talbert) Griffitts.
Russell was confirmed and baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Lone Elm, Missouri, a place that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He graduated from 8th grade in Clark, Missouri, in 1960 and then went on to graduate from Renick High School in 1964. He earned his degree from Kirksville Teachers College in 1968.
Russell dedicated his life to education, coaching, and community service. After college, he became a beloved junior high and high school teacher. He also coached basketball and baseball, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless students and athletes.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Russell could always be found cheering from the stands or catching a game on TV. He was a lifetime member and past board member of the Diamond Council, where his love for youth sports continued to shine. He also served on the board of Zion Lutheran School in Lone Elm, reflecting his deep commitment to both education and faith.
Russell married the love of his life, Jean, on October 18, 1991. Together, they built a life full of laughter, family, and shared passions. He had an avid interest in genealogy, always eager to explore and preserve family history. Russell was also known for his knack for finding treasures at yard sales, his unapologetic love of fried chicken, and his competitive spirit as an avid Scrabble player.
Among his many cherished relationships, Russell shared a special bond with his granddaughter Elena Bowman, a connection filled with warmth, wisdom, and love.
Russell is survived by his wife, Jean Griffitts; his children, David Ladd, Jason Griffitts, Brian Griffitts, Richard Griffitts, Vanessa Bowman, and Lisa Robbins; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronnie Griffitts.
Russell will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His dedication to family, education, and community will not be forgotten.
