Russell Perry Sutherland, affectionately known as Rusty, passed away on December 21, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on August 28, 1953, in Guilford County, North Carolina, Rusty was the cherished son of Mary Grubbs and the late David Sutherland.
Rusty accepted Christ as his Savior and became a devoted member of New Hope Independent Baptist Church in Salisbury, NC. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life.
Rusty proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he developed a deep sense of duty and patriotism. Following his service, he embarked on a long and successful career in the construction industry, ultimately rising to the position of Project Manager. Rusty's dedication and leadership were evident in every project he undertook.
In his personal life, Rusty found great joy in the simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman who cherished the tranquility and challenge of the sport. Rusty also treasured the moments spent with his family, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Rusty is survived by his wife, Starr Sutherland, and also leaves behind three sons: Russell Sutherland, Jr., Chase Sutherland, and Chris Sutherland. Rusty's legacy continues through his three adored grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.
He is also survived by his mother, Mary Grubbs Currie, his sister, Sheree Miller, and his brother, Rick Johnson.
Preceded in death by his father, Rusty will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever cherish the time they spent with him.
A Celebration of Life service for Russell will be held at 11:00am on December 27, 2025, at New Hope Independent Baptist Church in Salisbury, NC.
May he rest in peace, secure in the knowledge of a life well-lived and the love of those he leaves behind.
