DATELINE: Waterbury Ruth S. Hough – 77, of Lincoln Street, passed away peacefully at her home in the comfort of her family on Monday, April 03, 2006. Born in Duxbury on January 26, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Dean and Victoria (Lawrence) Smith. On December 14, 1950, she married Richard J. Hough in Waterbury.

Ruth attended Waterbury High School and as a young woman, worked at the Waterbury Inn as a housekeeper and waitress. Following her marriage, Ruth was busy as a homemaker and raising their six children. She later worked part time at Squier’s Maple Products in Waterbury and was a longtime daycare provider from her home. Ruth was also appreciated for the loving care she provided for her elderly neighbors throughout the years.

In her leisure time, Ruth enjoyed upholstering, playing Bingo, knitting, visiting on the telephone with her innumerable friends, going to lawn sales with her niece, Carol Ann Perry, as well as going on junkets to the Casino’s in Canada and at Foxwoods. Her memberships included the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Auxiliary Unit 59, and the Wesley United Methodist Church, both in Waterbury.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard J. Hough; their children, Carol Barber and her husband, George of Waterbury, Sandra Hough of Waterbury Center, Wendy Magee and her husband, Aaron of Duxbury, Harley Hough and his wife, JoAnn of Burlington, and Gary Hough and his wife, Deborah of Waterbury Center; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Carol Ann Perry of Waterbury; a sister, Dorothy Hall of Windsor; as well as several nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Brunell; 2 grandchildren, Talon and Aryana Magee; 1 great-grandchild, Elizabeth Brown; 5 sisters, N. Mary Dubuque, Kathleen Barclay, Eleanor Perry, Helen Smith, and Betty Fowler; and 2 brothers, Lawrence and Raymond Smith.

A Celebration of Life will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Friday, April 7th, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Later inurnment will take place in the Waterbury Center Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre VT 05641.
