Ruth Ellen Moate, 96, of Durand, IL passed away peacefully on March 1, 2024 in SSM St. Mary Hospital in Madison, WI after a sudden illness.
Ruth was born September 18, 1927 in Rockford, IL the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley and Edna (Burch) Newman. Ruth graduated from Winnebago High School class of 1945 and Rockford Memorial School of Nursing in 1948. She married her dancing partner, George Moate on February 18, 1950 in the Old Stone Church. Ruth retired from nursing to raise her family and to help George with the farm. Ruth touched the lives of many in the Shirland area community. She was a life long member of the Shirland United Methodist Church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School. She served as the leader of the Shirland Steamers and Seamers 4H Club where she provided guidance in sewing, cooking and coached softball for over 25 years. Ruth was an active member in the Rockford Memorial Nursing Alumni Association and the former Sugar River Grange.
Ruth will be remembered as being a kind and generous woman. Ruth enjoyed providing food, baked goods and lemonade to the Roscoe Sportsman's Club during their farm work assignments. Her love of cooking and baking was appreciated at family gatherings, church functions and various other community events. She was an avid reader who also loved gardening and birdwatching.
Survivors include: sons Stanley (Vicki) Moate, Sidney (Wendy) Moate, daughters Nancy (Chuck) Holme and Tracy (Tami) Moate, grandchildren Christopher (Jane) Weinermoate, Onica (David) Trevino, Emily (Brock) Young, Patrick (Samantha) Holme and Peter Holme, Step Grandchild Jeff Person; Great grandchildren Delilah, Carson and Everett Holme, Crystal and Brianna Trevino; Step Great Grandchildren Alyssa and Logan Person; sisters Janice Seyler, Lois (Dewey) Heslop; brother Paul Newman; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, husband George, daughter Rose Mary, granddaughter Ashley Manno, brothers Robert, Wayne, David John, sisters Bernice, Alice, Mary.
The funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 8, 2024 at McCorkle Funeral Home - Rockton Chapel 767 N. Blackhawk Blvd Rockton, IL. Burial will be in Shirland Township Cemetery. The visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 am until the time of ceremony on Friday. Following the graveside service a luncheon will be held at Shirland United Methodist Church.
A memorial will be established.
