The Life Journey of Ruth Ellen Gill Scott
Ruth Ellen Gill Scott entered into eternal rest on July 12, 2025, at White Oak Manor in Lancaster, SC. Ruth was born on October 1, 1934, in High Point, NC to the late John Isaac and Juanita Wilson Gill.
Ruth graduated with honors from William Penn High School in High Point, NC in 1954 and went on to receive a degree as a Medical Technologist from Gradwohl College in St. Louis, Missouri.
After graduating from Gradwohl College, Ruth moved to Plainfield, NJ where she began her 40 year career as a Medical Technologist (Lab Tech) at Muhlenberg, Overlook and Rahway hospitals in NJ. She worked primarily second and third shifts at these hospitals working as a phlebotomist and also did testing of the blood in their laboratories.
In 1957, Ruth and the late Scotland Blocker wed in Plainfield, NJ of which they had four children Roderick (Rocky), Aleatrice (Lea), Denise (Neicy) and Ollie. Ruth was a devoted mother and encouraged each of her children to live for the Lord.
Ruth took a sabbatical from the medical lab space and pursued her passion for the care of children by opening Toddler Village Day Care Center on East 6th Street in Plainfield, NJ. The day care center served such a great need for the community and the city of Plainfield until 1976 when Ruth moved to Charlotte, NC where she returned to her love of medical research by working for the Sickle Cell Association, Presbyterian Hospital and at Carolinas Medical Center as a medical technologist until she retired. She also obtained her certification as a Chaplain at Carolinas Medical Center and supported other hospitals.
Ruth met and married George Scott Jr. (Shorty) in Charlotte, NC in November 1979. Ruth loved to cook and dance. Her best loved meals were barbeque chicken, mac & cheese, potato salad, collard greens and sweet potato pie. Their home was a safe haven where they fed family, friends and strangers and poured out lots of love, guidance and prayers. She also became a caretaker for the elderly.
Ruth (lovingly referred to as Mother Scott) LOVED the LORD and was a true and faithful servant. During her 20 years in Charlotte, she became a member of Mount Moriah, Pentecostal Temple and Salem Baptist churches serving as a missionary, bible study teacher and church Mother.
In early 2000, Ruth and George relocated to Whiting, New Jersey where she continued her walk and attended Evangelistic Center Church of God in Manchester, NJ. By 2003, they moved to Somerset, NJ and Ruth became a member of The Cathedral under the leadership of Bishop Donald Hilliard where she served as a church Mother and prayer warrior until moving to Lancaster, SC in 2017 with her daughter Lea Gillis. Although not a member, Ruth loved attending Transformation Church in Indian Land, SC under the leadership of Pastor Derwin Gray until her declining health did not allow her to attend.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband George Scott Jr., her son Roderick Blocker and daughter Denise Blocker Patterson; her brother Coy DeCluster Gill and sister Marion Meneva Robertson.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories: daughters Aleatrice Gillis (late Kenneth) of Lancaster, SC; Ollie Blocker (Maurice) of Greenville, SC; 10 Grandchildren: Keenan Lawton, Harry Patterson, Whitney Youngblood, Brendon Patterson all from NJ; Briana Waiters (Josh) of Charlotte, NC; Jimmie Howard Jr., Jeanice Dreakford and Patrice Dreakford of Greenville, SC; Erin Youngblood and Lauren Youngblood of Atlanta, Ga.; four great-grandchildren; her beloved cousin/dear friend Jackie Norman and a host of nieces, a nephew, cousins, and friends.
