Mrs. Shuford passed away at Prisma Health in Columbia, SC on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. She was born in Sanford, NC the daughter of the late Connie L. and Mozelle Moore Holmes. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was an active leader for the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF). She was appointed and served on the Governor’s Foster Care review board for multiple terms. She enjoyed her time as a Girl Scout Troop leader. Her fruitcakes at Christmas and her scratch biscuits (with every special meal) were legendary. Stepping on to the tennis court at the encouragement of her husband Jack, Ruth played with vigor, but enjoyed most the new friends and camaraderie of the Bishopville ‘tennis crowd.’

Stepchildren surviving are John Hope Shuford (Glenda), Kitty Hawk, NC; Mary Ann Boyd (Hal), Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Jacob Shuford (Cathy), Columbia, SC, surviving brother, David Holmes (LaRue), Fuqyay-Varina, NC. Surviving also are twenty grandchildren, twenty –seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Huland L. Petty, and John Lawrence (Jack) Shuford, and also by her sister, Jackie Tingen, brother, Phillip Holmes, and infant daughter, Karen Petty.
Ruth will be remembered by all her family and friends as a loving, deeply caring person whose Christian values, tireless strength in the service of others, and generosity of spirit impacted the lives of all those she touched.
Norton Funeral Home and Crematory of Bishopville is honored to be of service to the Shuford family.
