Today, we gather to celebrate the life of Ruth Crabtree Workman, or as many of us lovingly knew her, Grandma Ruth. Born on January 18, 1931, in Hillsborough, Ruth's life was one filled with love, hard work, and devotion to both family and faith.
From the moment she met Herman "Poppy Red" Workman, her heart was set on a love that would last for 60 wonderful years. Their love story was one for the ages, built on mutual respect, deep affection, and a bond that could only be strengthened through life's ups and downs. Ruth and Poppy Red raised two children, Donna and Dennis, instilling in them the values of love, hard work, and dedication.
Ruth was a woman of many beautiful qualities, but perhaps what defined her most was her kindness. She had a gentle soul, always putting others first and always looking out for the people she loved. A strong woman, Ruth knew the importance of hard work-she and Poppy Red made sure their children, grandchildren, and everyone who was raised a Workman knew that success and respect were earned through effort, integrity, and love.
She worked for 30 years in the accounting department at Western Electric, retiring with a proud legacy of dedication and hard work. Ruth showed us all what it meant to balance both career and family, and through her example, we learned that with determination and passion, anything is possible.
She found joy in the simple things in life-whether it was porch rocking, enjoying time with friends, or dancing with Poppy Red, her happiness radiated from within. Ruth was a nurturing presence, a woman who made each of us feel valued and loved. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth, delicious food, and a welcoming embrace for all who entered. No one will forget her culinary masterpieces-home-grown vegetables, banana pudding, fried okra, and of course, the countless family meals where we gathered to share both food and laughter.
Ruth adored her four grandchildren-Stephen, Gray, Lizzie, and Anne. She was the best grandmother, always there for us with a comforting word, a thoughtful gesture, or a much-needed back scratch. She made sure we knew we were loved beyond measure, always proud of every single one of us. Her love for her grandchildren was pure and unconditional.
Ruth was also an active member of the Trinity Worship Center Church in Burlington, where she spent much of her time in devotion and service. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she was a spiritual guide not just for her family but for her community as well. Through her actions, Ruth showed us what it means to live with a heart full of grace, to serve others, and to walk in faith, no matter what.
Grandma Ruth's legacy is not just in the food she cooked or the prayers she said, but in the love she gave. Her strength, kindness, and unwavering faith shaped all of us in ways we will carry for the rest of our lives. While we are deeply saddened to say goodbye to her on this earth, we find comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with Poppy Red, and together, they are continuing to share their love in heaven.
Grandma, thank you for teaching us the importance of family, faith, and perseverance. May this time of sorrow bring us all peace, and may hurt be a holy thing for us, in knowing you are with your King and Savior! Thank you for showing us the beauty in simple things and for making us feel cherished every single day. We will miss you more than words can say, but we know you're in heaven, dancing with Poppy Red, and twirling through eternity.
