Ruthan Marie McPhillips passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, in Midland, Michigan. She was born on December 28, 1936, in Saginaw, Michigan, to James and Ann LeFevre. Ruthan attended St. Mary's Catholic School, where she was head cheerleader and homecoming queen.
She began her career with Bell Telephone Company before meeting the love of her life, Gary Lynn McPhillips of Midland. They married on July 19, 1957, in Midland, and together raised five children. Mark (Dawn) McPhillips, Kari Lynn McPhillips, Timothy (Gabby) McPhillips, Michael McPhillips, and Matthew (Stephanie) McPhillips.
Gary and Ruthan were also blessed with nine grandchildren Robb, Ryan (Rachel), Jack, Abigail, Caitlyn, Courtney (Justin), MacKenzie, James, and Caden. And four great grandchildren Trey, Ivy, Tripp and Lila.
For 40 years, Ruthan worked alongside Gary and their son Mark while building their family business McPhillips Motor Cars. Ruthan managed the household as well and found great joy in decorating, cooking, and entertaining family and friends. Known for her warmth, style, and generosity, Ruthan had a gift for making everyone feel welcome in her home.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary; her parents, James and Ann LeFevre, her brothers, James and Paul whose families we would always gather with at holidays. Ruthan is survived by her sister, Sandy, sister-in-law Donna Zimmer and lots of cousins.
The family wishes to thank the King's Daughters Home of Midland for their kindness and service. A memorial service will be held at 6:00pm on September 12, 2025, at Smith-Miner Funeral Home in Midland, MI with Pastor Don Duford officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00pm until time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider King's Daughters.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
