Phyllis Sutphen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Feb. 11, 2026.
Phyllis Marie Sutphen (Elandt), beloved to all those who knew her, passed away on

Friday, February 6, 2026 in the company of her loved ones.

Born on Christmas Eve in 1937, Phyllis had an infectious zest for life that endeared her to

everyone she met. Driven to excel and to serve others, she graduated from Marygrove

College in 1959 and became an elementary school art teacher. After marrying her soulmate

Mike in 1968, they established a loving home in which creativity and a love of learning

flourished. Beginning in the 1990s, Phyllis found a new outlet for her creative energy in

quilting. She created countless quilts that were precisely sewn pieces of art that she usually

gave to others as gifts that showed her love. Adventurous into her 80s, Phyllis traveled the

world to see her loving daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and

loved attending concerts and many other events with her beloved son.

Her sharp wit and sweet, playful nature intact until the end, Phyllis always lit up the room.

She will be missed beyond measure, and words cannot describe the loss felt by those who

loved her.

Phyllis is survived by her devoted husband, her two children, son-in-law, seven

grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters, many nieces and nephews, and

friends, all of whom will cherish the wonderful memories they have of her.

A cremation has taken place per her wishes. No services are planned at this time.

In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Disabled American Veterans in her honor.
