Sabina "Bina" Velasquez, aged 100, a Texas native and longtime resident of Madera and Santa Clarita, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday morning, November 28, 2025, in Valencia. Alongside her four sisters, she migrated across the United States in support of her father's railroad career, ultimately settling in California's Central Valley, where they contributed to fieldwork and packing houses.
In 1945, Bina relocated to Los Angeles with her first husband and began her employment at a grocery store, advancing to office manager-a position she held for three decades. She was predeceased by her first husband of 25 years and later was married to Leon Gilbert for 15 years before retiring together in Madera. Bina endured the loss of three husbands and her son, Frank Thomas Hernandez. She maintained close ties with St. Joachim Catholic Church in Madera and participated in the Old Friends Reunion Club.
A dedicated bowler recognized for achieving perfect games well into her nineties, Bina also devoted many years as a volunteer for both a local hospital and the church's altar society. A passionate supporter of the Dodgers, she attended a notable postseason game this year, witnessing another World Series victory.
Bina is survived by her sister, Frances Baldrica of Madera, her extended family, including her niece and caregiver Gloria Palmieri of Santa Clarita, and five generations of loved ones. She is also survived by the family of her most recent late husband, Ismael Velasquez, to whom she was married for four years. Renowned as a strong maternal presence, she will be deeply missed.
Visitation and Rosary are scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. at Jay Chapel in Madera, followed by a Mass at 11:30 A.M. at St. Joachim Catholic Church. Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
Contributions in her memory may be directed to the
Disabled American Veterans (3163 E. McKinley Ave., Fresno, CA 93702) or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (322 Eighth Avenue, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10001).
