Sally Ann (Hodge) Barusso, a lifelong resident of Gloucester passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, at the age of 87.
Sally was a woman of beauty, elegance, and genuine warmth whose kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she met. As president of her high school class at Gloucester High School, she was admired not only for her grace and poise, but for her friendliness and natural ability to connect with others. She was popular in the truest sense-because people felt seen, valued, and welcomed in her presence.
It was during her sophomore year at Gloucester High School that Sally's great love story began. She first noticed Steve, a striking young man gazing out the window of the Lanesville bus. A simple glance sparked a special connection, marking the beginning of a bond that would last more than 68 years.
A deeply caring person and a devoted friend, Sally, had a remarkable gift for making even a stranger feel instantly at ease. Her compassion, sincerity, and open heart created meaningful connections that she endured throughout her life.
Professionally, Sally built a distinguished career at Eaton Corporation, where she served as an executive secretary. Highly respected for her professionalism, discretion, and organizational skill, she worked closely with the company's foreign relations and executive leadership. She effortlessly coordinated complex schedules, orchestrated corporate and international travel, and graciously hosted visiting executives. Her ability to connect easily across cultures, paired with her calm competence, made her an invaluable presence and a trusted representative of the company.
She took great pride in her children and, later, in her cherished grandchildren. Known lovingly as Nana, she instilled confidence and encouragement in both her children and grandkids, always believing in them and lifting them up. Her role as a grandmother was a true highlight of her life, and she remained deeply involved-present, supportive, and endlessly proud of each of them.
Sally's legacy lives through the love she shared with Steve, the family she adored, the friendships she nurtured, and the countless lives she touched with her warmth, grace, and generosity of spirit.
Sally was predeceased by her husband Steve; survived by their children Steve and wife, Kelly, Scott and wife, Christina, Nikki and husband, Derek, and Julie and husband Steve; eight grandchildren-Nick, Stephen, and Sal, Alex, Cole, Paige, Nicole, and Brooke; and her sister-in-law Beverly Bunny Cain and her family.
