Graveside services for Mr. Sammy Lee Whipple, Sr., 77, of Mount Vernon, Indiana, will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 11 AM at the Jordan Stream Baptist Church Cemetery, 17105 Georgia Hwy 112 in Toomsboro, Georgia.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at 11:30 AM, at Schneider Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Indiana, with Reverend Christopher Millay officiating.
Born on Sunday, January 6, 1946, in Dublin, Georgia, Mr. Whipple was the son of the late Parker Whipple and Smithy Bell Jackson-Whipple. Mr. Whipple was an honor graduate in 1964 from the Oconee High School, and he graduated from Tuskegee University in 1968. He was the husband of Jane Whipple, of Mount Vernon, Indiana, He began his work in the pharmaceutical industry in Detroit, Michigan. His career spanned 32 years and he worked for a variety of companies but spent the bulk of his career working for Mead-Johnson/Bristol Myers Squibb. He ended his career as Director of International Contract Manufacturing, negotiating contracts for raw materials, in which he took great pride. He spent over five years as an executive on loan for the United Way of Southwestern Indiana.
His hobbies were varied. He remained interested in all aspects of numismatics (coin acquisition and collecting) throughout his life. He was also interested in all facets of the game of golf, including equipment, watching both professional and amateur golf, attending and volunteering at tournaments, as well as playing golf himself. In the latter part of his life, he increasingly became a researcher and historian of World War II, collecting many items from that era.
Mr. Whipple passed away on Friday, January 27th, 2023, at his home in Mount Vernon, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brothers, Griffin Whipple and Willie Lee Whipple.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Whipple; sons, Sammy Lee, Jr., of Evansville, Indiana, Michael and his wife, Connie, Houston, Texas; stepson, Kenneth Knowlton and his wife, Sarah, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and stepdaughter, Stacy Bragg (nee Knowlton) and her husband, Douglas; two grandsons, Sammy Lee III "Trey", and Garret of Evansville, Indiana; four step-granddaughters, Verite Quintana of Indianapolis, Indiana, Megan Johnson of Houston, Texas, Lesley Knowlton of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sophie Bragg of Saint Louis, Missouri.
He is also survived by his sisters, Willie Belle Bradley of Dublin, Georgia, Parker Whipple Pryce of Dublin, Georgia, and Ceola Foreman of Kingsland, Georgia, and his brother, Benjamin (Denise) Whipple of Willingboro, New Jersey, his eight loving nieces, Jackie Whipple, Dionne Dillard, Nicole S. Tucker, Tamala Foreman, Janice Pittman, Cherrie Arline, Annie Mae Gordon and Carolyn Daniels, and six nephews, Bernard Foreman, Brandon Foreman, Bernard Whipple, Daniel Wiggins, Matthew Sampson, and Reggie Whipple, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
