Samuel "Sam" Nichols George was born in Poughkeepsie, New York on March 21, 1936 to Thomas L. George and Rose Nichols George. Sam departed this earth on July 26, 2024, after a brief illness. Sam must have been welcomed to heaven by Jesus Christ amidst a chorus of angels as he was the kindest person one could ever meet.
After moving to Orlando, Florida as a child, Sam attended Bishop Moore High School where he loved to talk about his four years of playing football and never winning a single game! After high school, Sam served briefly in the U.S. Navy but had to return home to work in the family business when his father unexpectedly passed away. After stubbornly pursuing the love of his life, Dayle John George, he married her on July 15, 1961. They had four children within six years. Sam worked tirelessly to provide for his young family and never complained once. He was courageous in opening not one, but two, businesses in Shreveport - George's Glenwood Grocery on Line Avenue and Deli Casino Sandwich Shoppe at the corner of East Kings Highway and Youree Drive. After forty years, it was time for Sam to retire and spend his golden years with his wife, visiting with his children and grandchildren, and relaxing in his recliner watching his beloved LSU football and baseball games.
Sam leaves a legacy of unsurpassed kindness, love, and faith. How can one be larger than life but small in stature? Sam had a quiet presence, not one to be mistaken for weakness, but instead strength and grounding from his deep faith in God. How can one speak volumes, but not say many words? Sam had the ability to model love and acceptance by his actions, not necessarily words. He taught his children, those who worked for him, those whom he knew, and even those whom he met casually about faith, but he never preached. Rather, he demonstrated his faith by his charitable actions and unassuming conversations with those around him. He deeply touched others with kind words and his positive outlook in all situations.
Deli Casino patrons remember Sam for his patience, kindness, and humor. He made the best chocolate malt in the city, always "accidentally" making a little extra to share with any children in the restaurant.
Sam is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Dayle John George; his parents, Thomas and Rose George; and, his sister, Naomi Theresa Nassar and her husband, Albert. He is survived by his four children, Terri George Rech (Dave), Tom George (Liz), Traci George Alsup (Ty) and Jeff George (Jeannine). He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jay John, and sister-in-law, Carolyn John Zenter (David), nine grandchildren, Camilla Alsup, Max Alsup, Elaina Rech Davenport (Nelson), Caroline George Freeman (Aaron), Joe George, Natalie Rech Hutto (Forrest), Alyssa Mazurkiwecz, Mason Mazurkiwecz, and Ellis Rech; two great-grandchildren, Nelson Davenport V, and Lila Davenport; and, many treasured nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the many wonderful caregivers at The Chateaus at Montclair, with special thanks to Lisa Herrin, Lorraine Bendaw, and Rose Farris for their loving care and heartfelt friendship.
Visitation will be held at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Avenue in Shreveport on Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. with a Rosary immediately following at 6:30 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date.
