Prairie View resident, Samuel Burdett Leydig passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 90.
Burdett Leydig was born July 16, 1934 southwest of Glade the son of William and Bernice (Mutum) Leydig before later moving east of Glade. From an early age, he developed a strong work ethic, influenced by his parents. As a young boy, he helped hoe watermelons for his father and later began working with Neighbors.
Sam was united in marriage to Belva Bennett on December 9, 1962 at the Glade United Methodist Church. To this union, two children were born, Tammy and Mike.
Burdett's career took him through various roles in road construction. He worked for several area contractors, including the one responsible for building the Kirwin Dam. His longest tenure was with Van-Pak Construction, where he worked for 12 years before joining Tamko, where he spent 20 years before retiring. Dedicated to his community, he also served on the Prairie View Fire Department and was a member of the Prairie View Reformed Church.
Despite facing significant health challenges, including open-heart surgery 11 years ago and surviving cancer 10 years ago, he remained resilient. Unfortunately, his quality of life began to decline following radiation treatment. After a fall in early 2017, he spent a short time at Logan Manor. Another fall in June of 2021 led to further health complications.
Throughout his life, Burdett demonstrated dedication to his work, his faith, and his community. His legacy is one of perseverance, hard work, and devotion to those he loved.
His greatest joy was his children, followed closely by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also cherished having coffee with friends, collecting belt buckles and the Tamko guys would say aluminum cans, attending auctions, and visiting the Kansas State Fair-an event he attended for over 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers Norman (Queenie) and Dale; and a sister Darline (Walter) Brown.
Survivors include his wife Belva of Prairie View; daughter Tammy Tillotson and husband Gene of Kearney; son Mike and wife Lisa of Kearney; a sister Verlee Roark of Exeter, MO; 4 grandchildren: Sydney Sehi and husband Sam, Colin Tillotson, and Courtney Weaver and husband Neil, all of Omaha and Megan Leydig of Lincoln ; 3 great grandchildren: Creighton and Rhett Weaver and Addison Leydig; also his sister's-in-law Lois Leydig of Council Grove, KS, Lela Morgan of Phillipsburg, and Wanda Brown of Colby, KS; and numerous other relatives and friends.
