Samuel Morello Obituary
Fenton
- 87, passed away on October 18, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. A Celebration of Life will be held 2 PM Thursday, October 26 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Visitation will be from 11 AM - 2 PM on Thursday. Born in Detroit on December 18, 1935, Samuel was the son of the late Sam and Mildred (Dillon) Morello. Samuel grew up in Detroit with a large extended family nearby, graduating from Cass Tech High School in 1954. Sam attended The University of Michigan, initially studying architecture, then left for art school in San Francisco, and earned his MFA at The University of Michigan in 1962. Sam served for over 34 years at Flint Junior College/Genesee Community College/Mott Community College in the Fine Arts department initially as an instructor and later administrator. Sam lived in Flint from 1962 until 1979, then moved to Fenton where he enjoyed sailing with the Lake Fenton Sailing Club. Samuel is known for his woodcut printmaking skill. He was always very active in the Flint art community, and was one of the founding members of Buckham Gallery in downtown Flint. Samuel leaves behind his loving wife Marg, daughter Lea Morello (Mark Morra), son Samuel (Carole), step sons William (Ann) Chatterson, and Kip (Laura) Chatterson, step daughter Tammy (Tim) Tigner, eleven grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, special nieces, and numerous cousins.

Sam was one of the first people I met when first coming to Flint in 1975. He instantly made me aware of the high quality and energy in the art scene in this community. An exceptional print maker, a generous supporter of students and fellow artists, a true friend and colleague. I have many of his works, he will be missed, but will always live on in fondness and admiration when I view his pieces. Love you Sam.

Sam was a friend and mentor. The things he taught me and support he gave cannot easily be written in a way that would make a just tribute. In short, I don't think I'd be where I am today (an art professor at Mott) without Sam. I will never forget you, our friendship, your impact, or your teachings. Thank you very sincerely!

Mr. Morello, was my Art Instructor at Mott College in the 80s. A serious teacher and a patient man. He impacted my art forms in a positive way. Even my photography. He was an EXCELLENT Teacher. I have too many memories about Sam to pick just one. He is irreplaceable. He was such a good man, good friend, fine teacher and exceptional artist. His contributions to the art scene in Flint art too numerous and important to even begin to list. So glad I own a Morello. I can look at it every day and smile. Thank you for your constant support during my journey in Flint, Sam. Thanks for having faith in me.
