Samuel “Sam” Irvin Parker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, at Wendover Hospice House, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, friendship, and dedication. Born on June 7, 1962, in Cherokee County, South Carolina, he was the cherished son of William Thomas Parker, Sr. and Jennie Mae McDaniel Parker, both of whom predeceased him. Sam’s life was marked by unwavering love and commitment to his family, who will undoubtedly carry forward the warm feelings, fun times, and sweet memories of a life well-lived.

In his 37 years of marriage to Paula Ridings Parker, Sam exemplified the essence of genuine partnership, unending love, and steadfast dedication. Together, they built a life rich in love, laughter, and shared experiences. Their union brought forth two wonderful children: Zachary Parker, who, alongside his wife Madelyn, resides in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, and Emily Walker, who shares a life with her husband Westley, also in Boiling Springs. The delight he found in being a father is mirrored in his role as a grandfather to three adoring grandchildren: Kaegyn, Parker, and Clara Walker, whose lives he impacted immeasurably. Sam possessed an incredibly strong work ethic, unending gift of resourcefulness, fierce tenacity, and unique ability to lighten the mood with a well-placed joke. He instilled each of these qualities in his children and grandchildren.

Sam's bonds extended beyond immediate family; he was a treasured nephew and friend to Billy Ridings (Delores) of Shelby, a loving brother to Bill Parker of Blacksburg, and is also survived by a brother-in-law, Paul Whelchel of Blacksburg, a sister-in-law, Kandi Bridges (Keith) of Shelby, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sam had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord, which anchored his soul. He was a dedicated member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, where he served in the choir, as he was able. Sam also enjoyed Vacation Bible School, where he could use his talents to craft, create, and “engineer” decorations for each year’s theme. An avid carp fisherman, Sam frequented Midway Lakes, where he made lasting friendships. In addition to his family, his memory will be cherished by countless friends, church family, hunting buddies, and softball competitors. He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know him.

A man devoted to serving his community, Sam was an active member of the Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 82, Shelby, and as a volunteer for the American Legion World Series, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and service. He approached life with an open heart and a genuine smile, drawing people to him with his warm personality and unwavering kindness.

Sam was exceptionally fond of Christmas, especially in his later years. He had frequently, prior to his declining health, played the role of Santa Claus for various friends, neighbors, and community groups. He was particularly fond of “ringing the bell” during the Christmas season.

Sam's passing leaves an indelible void in the lives of his family and friends, notably felt by those who were close to him, including the memories shared with his late sisters, Debbie Parker and Bebe Whelchel. His legacy, one of deep love and commitment to family and community, will echo through the hearts of all he touched.

To honor his life and contributions, services will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Shelby, North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM to 2:45 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM, officiated by Rev. Tom Runyon. Sam will be interned immediately following the funeral service, as friends and family gather to celebrate a life well-lived and to bid farewell to a remarkable individual whose spirit will forever remain with them.

The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army of Cleveland County, Red Kettle Campaign, PO Box 1764, Shelby, NC 28151
