Samuel David Ross, Jr. was born on September 24, 1960, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Addie Bell and Samuel David Ross, Sr. As the third of four children, he was affectionately known as “Jr.” When he was two years old, his family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he spent his childhood as a beloved member of the community. Samuel was raised with a strong work ethic, a deep love for family, and a profound faith in God; values instilled in him by his parents. He and his siblings, Doris, Teresa, and Charles, spent their summers in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where they were surrounded by the warmth of their grandparents and extended family. Samuel took great pride in his family’s legacy, often sharing stories of his grandfather, George Ross, a respected businessman who, in 1962, generously donated land, further cementing the Ross family's deep roots in the area.

From an early age, Jr. was deeply involved in his church, Christ Pilgrims Rest MB Church, where he remained an active member throughout his life. He served in various capacities, including on the usher board, the men’s choir, and the food ministry. He was mostly known for his contributions to the repast ministry, particularly his well-loved donated pans of fried chicken. Sam Jr. also spent time as a boxer at Wohl’s Recreation Center where he reached the rank of “Sub Novice Special.” He developed an early interest in the towing industry through a career exploration program (DECA), which led him to work at Best Auto Parts after school.

Samuel was a proud 1978 graduate of Soldan International Studies High School in St. Louis. After high school, he briefly enlisted in the United States Army, specializing in field artillery. He was honorably discharged in 1979 after an injury to his legs and returned to his lifelong passion for auto salvage. Though Samuel faced challenges early on in his adulthood, he was proud to have found his way back, much like the Prodigal Son. He credited his transformation to his parents' love, family guidance, and spiritual support from his church community, especially elders like Dr. Elmer T. Mitchell and Deacon Otha Grace. He also supported community organizations such as Grill for Glory and Teens of Tomorrow.

In 1985, Samuel married Sylvia, and together they had two children: Krystle Monique, who tragically passed away in infancy, and Brittany Nicole. Though Samuel and Sylvia divorced shortly after Brittany’s birth, they remained united in their love for Brittany. Samuel later married Jennifer Ross, and they shared several years together before separating amicably. Samuel deeply cherished his role as a father and grandfather above anything. He enjoyed spending time with his two sets of twin grandchildren, whom he was very proud of. In his final years, he was grateful for the opportunity to meet and connect with his other daughter, April Lee, and he treasured the priceless time he spent with her and her boys. Many of his happiest moments were those surrounded by family and friends, whom he held close to his heart.

Samuel was always eager to learn, pursuing education at Florissant Valley Community College and LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee. Although he explored several passions throughout his life, he remained devoted to the automotive industry. Samuel worked for some of the largest auto recycling and salvage yards in the St. Louis area, spending 15 years at Best Auto Parts and Brock’s Auto Parts. He then took a leap of faith and started his own business, Son of Sam’s Towing, which became his pride and joy. Even in his final days, Samuel continued to stay active in his business, always “wheeling and dealing,” with his phone never ceasing to ring.

Samuel was known for his unforgettable personality, his kindness, his jokes, his “tell it like it is” demeanor and his willingness to help others. He was a loving and generous soul, always showing up for family, friends, and his church. If he had something you needed, you could count on him to give it. If you needed to sell your car or needed a tow, you knew who to call.

His mother Addie Bell Ross, his father Samuel David Ross, Sr., his daughter Krystle Monique Ross preceded him in death, along with a host of strong family pillars who paved the way of his foundation. Samuel leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories to: His daughters Brittany Nicole & April Lee; his grandchildren Aiden and Mark (April) and Trystin, Tryniti, Jayden, and Jayda (Brittany); his siblings Doris, Teresa (Anthony Sr.), Charles (Kara); a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, business partners and the community as a whole who will miss him dearly.
