Samuel Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Direct Cremation of Maine - Belfast on Jan. 15, 2026.
Samuel T. Smith, 75 of Augusta passed away after a long battle with dementia at Augusta

Rehab and Living Center on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Sam was born on May 3, 1950, to Harry B. Smith and Dorine V Smith (Burnham) in Monmouth

Maine. He attended school locally up to 8

th grade at which time he decided to drop out and help

his father on the family farm. As an adult he went to work at Bancroft and Martin in Leeds

Junction as a laborer in their concrete culvert manufacturing plant until it closed. Sam then

returned to work on the family farm and in the woods alongside his two brothers working oxen

and horses. Sam would also often help good friends Pete and Kay Gilman on their farm.

Sam was never married although he had a couple long term relationships over the years. Sam

had no children of his own but he shared a special bond with his nephew Andrew Smith. He

enjoyed farm life and everything to do with it. He enjoyed working with draft horses in his

younger days but would occasionally work a pair of oxen to help his brother or nephew when a

team needed exercise and time was short. Sam was happiest when he was busy and was well

known for his positive attitude. He had a tremendous work ethic, worked hard all his life and

never complained. He believed the time for taking a break was when the job was done. Sam was

a very kind and generous soul who would give to anyone, anything so they didn't have to go

without, even if it meant he did. Sam was very family-oriented and enjoyed spending time with

his brothers and the daily phone call from his nephew Andrew. He was also known for his little

sayings like "it's a discouraging old life sometimes" and a few others that might not be

appropriate here.

Sam is predeceased by his parents Harry and Dorine Smith, brother Sterling Smith, sister June

Brown and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his brother John Smith and

John's wife Geneva Smith of Augusta, his sister Jean Davis and her husband Carl of Sabattus,

nephews Andrew Smith of Auburn, Everett Smith and his wife Tayla and their five children,

David Mason, nieces Dorine Smith Mason and her three children, Mary Dillenbeck and her

husband Matt, a special niece Grace Smith "AKA grandma" plus several other aunts, uncles,

cousins, nieces and nephews.

In the spring, a celebration of Sam's life for friends and family will be announced. Should friends

desire, contributions or condolences may be sent to Sam's nephew, Andrew Smith, 272 Main St.

Apt. G03, Auburn, Me 04210 to help the family with afterlife expenses.
