Sandi Berman Obituary

Sandi Berman will be remembered for her love of fashion, retail and design. She was renowned for her prowess selecting the most beautiful, elegant and standout pieces of her favorite genre: mid to late century modern art, decor, furniture, and Couture costume jewelry from the same era. With all things from fashion to art and furniture, she loved bold color, geometric shapes and form, and pieces that were unusual or unique. She cared nothing for trendy and shied away from anything that she deemed common. Sandi died of leukemia. She was 79.
Sandi lived for her frequent road trips to find her treasure, and delighted in seeing America. She loved road food and dive bars; a good meal and a special craft cocktail were highlights of her buying trips. She was incredibly private and enjoyed dining alone, but she made friends everywhere she went and had communities of people she stayed and dined with from NYC, to the Hamptons, Brimfield, MA, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, the Carolinas, Miami, Chicago, to LA.
Sandi loved designing a space with the pieces she found on her travels - be it a booth at a show, her store, or a home. She was knowledgeable about the design and designers of her chosen era, and opinionated and confident in her bold approach, earning high praise, recognition and loyalty from those who enjoyed her work. Sandi designed residential interiors in Manhattan, the Hamptons, and High Point, NC.
Sandi grew up In Lancaster, PA and moved to NYC when she was 20. Her first job was as a clothing model at Bloomingdale's flagship 59th street store.
Sandi's first retail shop, Art Adventures, was on Madison Avenue at 72nd street. The shop specialized in custom framing and whimsical art products for the home, much of which she sourced through artists she met at arts festivals from the Berkshires to Miami. She opened her first antiques shop in Westhampton Beach in the late 1970's, "Oldies but Goodies." In the mid 1980s, Sandi opened "Deco Deluxe," a retail store at 917 Lexington Avenue specializing in vintage furniture, home decor and art. She kept that store front until 2016 and developed a loyal customer following. By the late 1990s, Sandi changed the name of her business from Deco Deluxe to "Deluxe," as her taste evolved to the later half of the 20th century. Deluxe remained until the present day (@deluxenyc10021). For over two decades, Sandi ran a second location of Deluxe, at 74th street and Lexington, and SkyScraper, on east 60th street in Manhattan. Sandi was one of the first antiques dealers with a permanent booth in 1st Dibs in the NYC D & D building.
Sandi Berman was a dealer in the New York Modernism show at the Armory for all 25 years that it ran. Her store, Deluxe, has been the gift shop in the annual Hamptons Showhouse and Holiday House for many years.
In 2016, Sandi shuttered her Manhattan storefronts and took Deluxe on the road. She regularly exhibited at the Winnetka Antiques + Modernism Show, Marburger Farm Antique Show in Central TX, the twice-annual High Point Market, the Original Miami Beach Antique Show, Greenville County Art Museum, Liberty Antique Festival, and the annual East Hampton Antiques and Design Show. In the winter months, Sandi was a regular fixture at the Lincoln Road Antiques and Collectibles market.
At the time of her death, Sandi had permanent space in the Highpoint Antiques and Design Center, and the nearby Chelsea on Green. She lived in Jamestown, NC and Miami, FL, but anyone who knew her knew she traveled most of the time. The three-times a year Brimfield Antiques market was a favorite.
Sandi is remembered for her elegant, chic style, her boundless energy, her drive for success, her love of all things modern and vintage, and her delight in food, cocktails and travel. She is survived by her daughter, Meredith Berman Lovejoy, son-in-law Curvin Lovejoy, and grandsons Henry and Teddy. A memorial service will be held in NYC in September.

Very sad to hear of the passing of my friend and colleague Sandi. While acquainted with her through business for many years it was while working for her during antique shows here in Chicago that I learned what a kind, generous, thoughtful person she was. She was also a consummate professional blessed with exquisite taste, a winning combo for success and respect in her field. She will be missed.

I will miss Sandi's unbridled enthusiasm in her work. She had a style that was hers alone, and it was always good. I will truly miss her visits to my shop when she was in Chicago and especially her effervescent personality. I am very sad today.
