Sandra Ann Beckering was born on October 15th, 1932 in Minneapolis, MN. Shortly after birth she was adopted by Doctor David O. & Beatrice R. Berge. She was raised in Roseau, MN enjoying spending time with her friends and in the wintertime spending time outdoors skiing, ice skating, and sledding She attended her school there, graduating in 1950.
After graduating, she went on to attend St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. While there, she majored in Biology and Chemistry. In her introductory courses she met her future husband, Roland Beckering. She often joked that since the professor seated students alphabetically she was often seated next to or near each other. This soon led to a relationship between them. They continued seeing each other and upon graduation, they were married in Roseau, MN. Roland would often joke that they were married on his birthday because that way he could never forget their anniversary.
Their honeymoon was spent driving to Alaska with Roland in a station wagon along with Roland's parents in another station wagon to visit a ministry that the local Christian Reformed Church supported. Once they returned from this trip both she & Roland moved to Chicago where both of them were accepted at Northwestern University Medical School. Roland began his studies to become a doctor and Sandy studied laboratory Technology. While they were studying in Chicago, their daughter Debra Jean was born. After Roland had graduated from med school they moved to Duluth, MN for his residency training. While there, a son, Dale Robert, joined the growing family. After completing his residency training, Roland opted to join the US Public Health Service and one of his choices for a posting was Alaska. It was during this time that the family grew by another son, David Bruce. When his service was completed, the family moved back to Edgerton, Where Roland grew up. He joined his father, Gerrit, in his medical practice there and after this move another son, Douglas Scott, was added to the family.
In her time spent in Edgerton Sandy spent time involved in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, community blood drives, community history, the Pipestone County Historical Society, and later spent a great deal of time doing research on the records of Hillside Cemetery. She used to love doing crossword puzzle from the Minneapolis Sunday newspaper. She would meet with Ap Vander Pol & Thelma Kooiman to check each of their results. She was also quite proud of taking a hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque, NM. She also had an on-going interest in genealogy due in part to her own adoption. She researched both her birth family's as well as her adoptive family's trees and Roland's family tree as well. She found and later' met members of her biological family. She was especially interested in Norwegian history and language. She attended many week long sessions at Concordia Language Village near Bemidji, MN.
After Roland's passing in 2013, Sandy continued to live in the house that she designed on Mechanic Street. After suffering a broken hip she moved to Edgebrook Care Center. She remained living there until she passed away on the evening of September 14th, 2025. Sandy was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in
Edgerton, MN.
She is survived by her sons Dale (Donna), Bruce, & Scot (Karin), six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jon, her husband Roland, and her daughter Debbie.
