April 30, 1940 – May 15, 2025
Sandra "Carla" Crutsinger passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on May 15, 2025, at the age of 85, surrounded by the love of her family. A faithful disciple of Jesus, devoted wife, mother, and pioneering educator, Carla lived a life marked by service, compassion, and unwavering hope in the gospel.
Born in Dallas, Texas, on April 30, 1940, to Samuel Crawford Cooper and Edith Roberts Cooper, Carla's early years instilled in her a heart for learning and a steadfast spirit. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas in 1958 and continued her education at The University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Education and joined Delta Zeta sorority. It was there that she met the love of her life, Gerald Crutsinger, whom she married on September 4, 1961. They celebrated fifty years together before his passing in 2012.
Carla's passion for education led her to complete graduate studies in educational psychology at Baylor University and, later, to found Brainworks Educational Center in Carrollton in 1981, known for its innovative approach to helping students thrive despite learning challenges. For over 35 years, she championed the needs of students with learning differences, developing research-based curriculum and offering personalized support. Her pioneering method empowered thousands of students, families, and educators. She authored more than a dozen educational books and resources, each offering practical strategies rooted in research. These works continue to provide insight and hope to educators, parents, and students alike.
More than an educator, Carla was a servant of the Lord. A longtime and faithful member of First Baptist Church at The Fields in Carrollton, she served in adult Bible studies, Vacation Bible School, and various teaching ministries, always with her hallmark blend of research, humility, grace, and a well-prepared PowerPoint. Her life was a living testimony to the love of Christ and the power of perseverance guided by faith.
In her final years, Carla faced the quiet challenges of Alzheimer's with the same grace and perseverance that marked her life.
Carla was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Glynn Crutsinger, Sr. and her parents, Samuel Crawford Cooper, Sr. and Edith Roberts Cooper. She is survived by her three sons-Glynn, Sam, and Howard-and their families; her grandchildren, Hunter, Travis, Cooper, Benjamin, and Cole; her great-grandchildren, Greyson and Wesley; and her brother, Samuel Crawford Cooper, Jr.
Though her earthly journey has ended, her influence continues through the countless lives she touched and the gospel she lived.
A memorial service celebrating Carla's life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 2, 2025, at First Baptist Church at The Fields, 1401 Carrollton Parkway, Carrollton, TX. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. Carla will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, beside her beloved husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Carla's life by contributing to the
Alzheimer's Association in her memory. Your gift will support critical research and care through her tribute page: https://swiy.co/Carla_Memorial
