Beloved sister, aunt, friend and colleague, Sandra Kay Grant passed away May 3, 2023, following a brief illness. She was born September 1, 1948, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Wallace E Grant Jr. and Setsuko “Judy” Shiozawa. As a child she lived in Hawaii, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Japan before the family settled in Clearfield, Utah.

A 1966 graduate from Clearfield High School, Sandi excelled in everything she tried. She won many medals in competitive swimming, tumbling and gymnastics and taught classes in those sports.

She completed cosmetology school during high school and earned a Master’s degree in mathematics. She operated her own beauty shop in Syracuse for many years while teaching math at Weber State and the Ogden ATC.  As an Education Specialist at the Utah State Department of Education, she administered Title 1 funding for Utah schools and oversaw adult education programs. Hundreds of educators and students can affirm Sandi's positive influence in their lives.  Her impact was also felt nationally through her participation in professional associations.

Sandi was an instant friend to all she met. Quick to love everyone, she never spoke unkindly and left every person, place, and situation better for her having been there. The ripple effects of her unconditional love are endless. She was a powerful force in whatever activity or organization she joined and always had a bag of crocheting projects wherever she went. She sold lovely and useful handcrafted items at boutiques and gifted many to her family and friends. Sandi always drew others together. She proactively organized monthly lunches at the Utah State Board of Education with her many colleagues, often providing the lion's share of the food. Her dishes for family and pot-luck meals were eagerly anticipated and devoured with great enjoyment.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she enjoyed teaching Primary children.

A member of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) for many years, she served on the national education committee and on the board of directors of the Wasatch Front North chapter. She was the current chapter president. She attended many JACL national conventions as a chapter delegate and served on various convention committees.

She is now enjoying heavenly reunions with her parents, step-mother (Kiyoko “Margie” Tsuru Grant), sister-in-law and grandparents. She is survived by her siblings: Betty Jo Campnell, Larry Grant, Darlene Grant, John Grant, Carl Grant, Ken Grant and Patti Merrill, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

We all express to Sandi, “Okagesama de genki desu – ( ).  Thanks to you, we are better!”

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 11:00 am at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah. Friends may visit with family Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary.

I am truly sad to hear of the passing of a very beautiful person that happened into my life at a very uncertain time (1974) and lifted me up with her vibrant personality and laugh so kind and loving. I am at a loss personally for a great love has passed. I also am a better person for having known and been touched by her I will miss her greatly. RIP my friend....

I will surely miss Sandi! She was a force in the JACL. We attended many conferences together over the years and it was always a joy to see what she was crocheting. Of course I had to buy something--now I will remember Sandi when I use them! Rest in Peace, sweet lady.

I met Sandi through the many boutiques at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple and Honeyville Buddhist Temple. She w was the absolute sweetest lady! I feel so blessed to have met her and had her in my life. We are going to miss her so much! Her absence at the boutique in Honeyville will be greatly noticed. She was an instant friend to all of us. I am so sorry for the loss of such an amazing lady. You are all in my thoughts.
