Sandra (Sandy) Jean Herron, 83 years of age, was joyously welcomed into her Savior's arms on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. She was a devout Christian and loved God throughout her life. She was an active, joyful supporter of Our Savior Lutheran Church, contributing both her time and resources.
Born in
Olean, New York on February 10, 1942, to the late Robert Weldon and Christeen Hunter, she was the fourth oldest of six children. Her family resided in various locations around New York State including Olean, Buffalo, and Knapp Creek. At five years old, Sandy and her family moved to the Southern Indiana area.
While attending junior high school, Sandy met her future husband Donald (Don) Herron. They were married on June 11, 1960, at Grace Lutheran Church in New Albany, Indiana. For 65 years, they have been bound by a steadfast relationship marked by devotion and grace.
Sandy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a mother to four children, and Godmother to several nieces and one nephew. Along with her parents, Sandy was preceded in death by her sister Carol Hunt, her brother Bobby Weldon and sister Nancy Bale. She is survived by her children, Pamela Swann (Joel), Kim Hall (Kevin), Donald Herron, Jr. (Bobbie Jo), Stacey Young (Dean); and her siblings Donna Shireman, Sue Wimsatt (Mike); and her grandchildren Tara Swann, Trent Swann, Sara Oswalt (Blake), Brandon Hall (Logan), Josh Herron (Olivia), Grant Young (Michelle), Adam Hall (Stacey), Ben Herron, and Megan Conner (Robbie), and 4 great grandchildren.
Sandy and Don began their family in
Louisville, Kentucky, later settling in Southern Indiana before returning to Louisville for good in 1973. While raising their children, Sandy worked at Southeast Federal Savings & Loan, starting as a bank teller and eventually advancing to Lead Bookkeeper. The family enjoyed spending time outdoors, often taking their young children camping-frequently with a lively caravan of aunts, uncles, and cousins along for the adventure.
Sandy and Don loved to travel; but usually by car or train due to her lack of love for flying. Florida beaches were a favorite destination with a stop off in Tennessee, to visit their grown children. She loved to lie in the sun as much as she hated the cold. Together they enjoyed many cruises, especially those they organized for their children and grandchildren. They also travelled many places with her siblings, most notably winters at Palm Island, Florida and trips west.
For shorter trips, Sandy enjoyed trips to the "boat"-later Caesars Casino-for relaxing sessions at the slot machines.
She fiercely loved and defended her family, but when it came to family and friend employees, she was lovingly known as 'the warden of Fresh Roasted Corn on the Cob'. She commanded the cleanest and best food booth's ever at the Kentucky State Fair.
Visitation will be 2:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, January 28, at Pearson Funeral Home, 149 Breckinridge Lane,
Louisville, Kentucky. Additional visitation is available from 11:00am to noon the following morning, Thursday, January 29, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 8305 Nottingham Parkway,
Louisville, Kentucky. Her funeral service will immediately follow at noon, with a burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, 4623 Preston Highway,
Louisville, Kentucky. Following the graveside service, the family will be welcoming family & friends for a luncheon back at Our Savior Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, it is asked that memorial contributions be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church.
