Sandra Knightly Obituary

Sandra G. Knightly

Amherst, MA - Sandra (Grandonico) Knightly of Amherst, MA, passed away on March 25, 2026, at the age of 83, following a courageous battle with cancer. Known to many as "Sandy," she faced her illness with remarkable strength, grace, and a positive spirit that inspired all who knew her.

Born to Julius V. Grandonico, Sr. and Mary (Wanczyk) Grandonico, Sandy spent nearly her entire life in Amherst. From a young age, she learned the value of hard work alongside her family on the farms of Hadley, MA, and later at her parents' convenience store (The Little Store) near the UMass campus.

A 1960 graduate of Amherst High School, Sandy was a spirited cheerleader who loved music and life. She was active in the community, serving as Assistant Town Clerk, a Town Meeting Member, and an election poll worker. In 1979, she founded Sandy Knightly Real Estate.

Sandy enjoyed driving her beloved convertibles, sharing a glass of wine on the front porch with family and friends, and hosting gatherings that brought people together. She loved to cook and entertain, especially around the holidays, which always featured her signature Italian wedding soup and antipasto.

Above all, Sandy's greatest love was her family. She was wholly devoted, always placing their needs above her own. She never missed an opportunity to support her children and grandchildren, traveling any distance to be present in their lives. Her home was always open, warm, and welcoming. Her love and hospitality extended to everyone who entered.

Sandy was a strong yet humble woman, guided by common sense, unwavering loyalty, and honest conviction. She respected others deeply and lived her life with quiet confidence and integrity.

She married David R. Knightly, Sr. on October 24, 1964, and they shared 61 years of marriage until his passing in October 2025.

She is survived by her three sons, David Jr. (Audra), Todd (Diana), and Dean (Denise); her cherished grandchildren, Tim, Pat, Tyler, Dylan, Peyton, Logan, and Edward James; and her brothers, Julius (Marisa) Grandonico Jr., Peter (Kathy) Grandonico, and Vincent Grandonico. She was predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband.

Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Cooley Dickinson Hospital and Hospice, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Center for Extended Care at Amherst, as well as to Stephanie Canty of Dana-Farber and Father Smegal for their support and kindness.

A private service will be held to honor Sandy's life.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Sandra's memory.

Earlier today

We were across-the-street neighbors for 29 years. We spend many hours on Sandy's front porch visiting with her and her husband Dave. She was everything you could ask for in a neighbor. Its hard to look across the street and realize that she's not there any more and that those days are over. She will live on in spirit. We helped out in every way we could in her final days as she continued to wear a smile. Now she is in a better place with her husband, Dave.
