Sandra McCorkle Mahon

Sandra (Sandy) McCorkle Mahon, 74, of Tallahassee, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home with family members present on August 20, 2022. Sandy was born March 7, 1948, in Washington, Georgia, to Sam Sterling McCorkle and Ruby Alma (Herndon) McCorkle, both preceding her in death.
Sandy loved traveling, quilting, and in early years playing the piano. She was a proud graduate of the University of Florida and loved watching her Gators on the football field. She loved teaching Biology at Chiles High School for many years and enjoyed encouraging her students to think and explore the complexities of living things on earth.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years Gary Mahon; three children, Kathryn (James) Trinkle of Rockwood, Tennessee, Matthew (Samantha) Mahon of Graniteville, South Carolina, and Ryan (Victoria) Mahon of Tallahassee; and granddaughter, Alexandra (Lexi) Mahon and soon-to-be grandson Sterling Mahon. She is also survived by nieces Lynn Bailey (Mark) Weigly and Cecelia (Lee) Bailey, both of Cairo, Georgia. Preceding her in death were her sister Gwen (McCorkle) Bailey and nephew Lee Bailey, both of Cairo, Georgia.
In an expression of her great love of science, Sandy requested her body be donated to the Anatomical Board of the State of Florida for anatomical and medical research. A gathering in her memory will occur following the return of her cremains.
