Sandra Lynn Wallace Mayes
March 3, 1952 (
Detroit, Michigan) – January 25, 2026 (
Longview, Texas)
Sandra Lynn Wallace Mayes passed away on January 25, 2026, in
Longview, Texas. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, known to all as one of the most generous and loving women anyone could ever meet.
Sandy was always the first to act when when she saw people in need-sending thoughtful cards (and gathering as many signatures as possible), writing checks, delivering home-cooked meals (in abundant portions - the more calories, the more love), or sending flowers (though heaven forbid anyone send flowers to her!). Serving others wasn't an occasional action; it was central to who she was. Her servant's heart touched everyone she encountered. Sandy also had a wicked sense of humor and did not suffer fools lightly. She was quick-witted and sharp, able to deliver the perfect comment at just the right moment and following it up with a knowing smile.
She enjoyed spending time with family, collecting seashells, joyfully giving impromptu lessons on sea beans to visitors, cooking for everyone, shopping (especially when she found a great sale and could buy in bulk), playing the piano, and cheering on Notre Dame football.
Above everything else, Sandy loved her Lord deeply and lived her faith daily, always striving to show others the generosity and love that God had shown to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Mae Wallace; and brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Elaine Falbe.
Sandy is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Richard Mayes of
Longview, Texas; her daughter, Melissa Mayes of
Longview, Texas; her sons, Jason Mayes and wife Gail of Sugar Land, Texas, and Brian Mayes and wife Brandy of White Oak, Texas; her nephew, Jim Falbe and wife Janelle of Phoenix, Arizona; and her cherished grandchildren: John Mayes, Joseph Mayes, Isaiah Mayes, Zoe Mayes, Micah Mayes, Caleb Falbe, Noelle Falbe, Maddie Falbe, and Anna Falbe. Her loving spirit also collected what she called 'bonus' grandchildren along the way, including Ayla, Fareed, and Hira Khan and many others who called her grandma.
Sandy's legacy of faith, generosity, honesty, and laughter will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
Funeral services for Sandra will be held on Friday, January 30 at 2pm at White Oak Community Church with a visitation to be held one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will take place at Rosewood Park in Longview.
