In Memory of Sandra Sue Idol Shimko
Sandra was born in Meeker, Colorado to Loren and Lana Idol on August 5, 1941. She grew up with her siblings, Pam, Arlene, Ken, Lorna and Polly at their 9th Street home. She loved her horses and rode throughout Meeker with her friends Lani and Susan. In 1959 she married Joe Shimko (d.) and gave birth to Ken the next year and Susan two years later. They had moved to Grand Junction for a short time but moved back to Meeker to raise the kids.
In the mid-70’s Sandy, Joe and partners took over L. E. Idol and Company John Deere store and renaming it S and S Equipment. Sandy and Joe divorced in 1979. Susan and she moved to Clifton and Ken went to college. Sandy started selling for Intermountain Office Supply in Grand Junction where her territory included Eastern Utah, South and Western Colorado and the 4 Corners area. In 1989 she moved to Mesa, AZ working as an outside saleswoman, office manager and rural mail carrier. She was so proud of her degree in Archeology which she got when she was 53 from Mesa College in Mesa, AZ.
In 1989 she moved back to Meeker to take care of her mother, Lana, and worked at Samuelson True Value and the post office. A position at the White River Museum became available; she gladly took it as a docent and computer operator. In her spare time she learned how to draw and one of her drawings won at the Rio Blanco County Fair. She loved that recognition and reading almost anything! In 2017 she retired and moved to Brush, Colorado to be with family and friends.
She loved her family and friends who live all over the world. She is predeceased by her son-in-law, Bruno Grosskopf, but is survived by daughter Susan Grosskopf and their sons Alex and Bruno Grosskopf. Son Ken Shimko and his wife Toni and their children, Amber Megel and husband Ryan and their children. Jennifer Streetman and her husband Dan and their child. Corwin Shimko and his wife Alisa and their children. Her siblings Pam Idol and family, Arlene Broadhurst and her husband John and their family, Ken Idol and his family, Lorna Idol and her family and Polly Idol and her family.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to animal charities, especially horse rescues.
Sandra’s Family will have a life celebration in Meeker later in the year.
