Sandra Lea Smail, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11th, 2026, at her home in Maryville, MO. Born on May 5th, 1960, in Galesburg, IL, Sandra lived a life full of love, service, and adventure.
Sandra is survived by her devoted husband, Curt Smail, of the home. She was the cherished mother of four daughters: Amber (Matt) Parker of Hopkins, MO; Christa (Joe) Byer of Parkville, MO; Corrie (Ralph) Montenico of Lenexa, KS; and Kelly (Matt) Thomas, also of Lenexa, KS. Her legacy continues through her seven adored grandchildren: Olivia, Angeline, Emma, Ezra, Elizabeth, Skye, and Lennox. Sandra is also survived by her brother, Tommy (Sherrie) Gilbert, and her sister, Kathy (John) Rubacha.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Thomas Gilbert and Clara L. Gilbert, as well as her brother, Tim Gilbert.
Sandra dedicated her professional life to serving the community for 19 years as the Recorder of Deeds for Nodaway County in Maryville, Missouri. Her commitment to her work was matched by her passion for her faith and community involvement. As an active member of Women's Aglow, a Christian women's organization, Sandra was known for her leadership and dedication to hosting and coordinating numerous events that enriched the lives of many.
An avid reader and accomplished seamstress, Sandra had a wide array of interests. She loved traveling and had a particular fondness for the majestic Redwood Forest and the breathtaking views from the top of Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park, which she hiked with great enthusiasm. Her adventurous spirit was matched by her generous heart, always seeking ways to help others and make a positive impact in her community.
A graveside service to honor Sandra's life will be held at White Oak Cemetery in Pickering, MO, on Friday, February 13th, 2026, at 2:00 pm. Arrangements are being handled by Bram Funeral Home.
Sandra Lea Smail will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering faith have left an indelible mark on the hearts of her family and friends. As we gather to celebrate her life, we remember her as a beacon of love and compassion, whose legacy will continue to inspire us all.
