Sara Elizabeth Cartwright Boobar of Austin, Texas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Bertram, Texas with her grandson, Ryan Callahan by her side. Sara was born October 16, 1939, in Becker, Minnesota, the fourth of six children at home in a rural farmhouse in Becker, Minnesota located in Sherburne County between the Mississippi and Elk Rivers. She grew up on the farm attending a one room schoolhouse in the small town.

For high school she was able to move to Detroit Lakes to live with a family and do housework for them to be able to attend Detroit Lakes High School where she excelled in her studies and was part of the Homecoming Court her senior year. During her sophomore year she met the love of her life, John Boobar, at the roller-skating rink in Hawley, MN. She graduated high school in 1958 and attended business college and worked at a bookkeeping office while planning a wedding to John in February of 1959.

John and Sara welcomed a baby girl, Denise, to their family in September 1960. They soon decided to leave the cold winters of Minnesota and headed for San Antonio, Texas in 1961. The story was always told that they put three names of warm weather states in a hat - California, Florida, and Texas and pulled out the great state of Texas! They later added two sons to the family, Jeffrey, and Daniel, and lived in San Antonio for 13 years. They finally permanently settled in Austin, Texas in 1974.

Sara spent her life as a homemaker and helped her husband in his sales business for Stroll-O-Chair Baby Furniture Company and Baby Tenda Corporation. As the children grew into adulthood, she also took on the new trend of the time "temporary worker" for many different businesses and enjoyed that style of work that allowed her the freedom to choose when and how long she wanted an assignment.

She worked in bookkeeping, real estate, office management and in 1982 helped a gentleman named Gary Hoover start a brand-new type of bookstore called Bookstop. The bookstore was at one time the fourth largest bookselling chain in the United States and was eventually acquired by Barnes & Noble in 1989. She was instrumental in the initial stages of business, helping Gary with the administrative tasks and remained friends with him for many years.

She went on years later to work for the Texas Railroad Commission in downtown Austin and retired there after 10 years of service.

Her other passions were bowling, being part of champion bowling league for many years, traveling across the country and to Europe with John, and most of all, reading. She loved books and instilled her great love of books with her children and grandchildren. Until the near end of her life she was reading thirty books every two weeks and she loved the Lake Travis Community Library Bookmobile coming by her home every month to stock up on new reads.

She also loved spending time with her grandchildren for many years and was so proud to welcome great-grandchildren into her life as well.

Sara was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John Oscar Boobar, and son Jeffrey Boobar. Also, her parents, Grover and Armanella Cartwright, brothers, John and David Cartwright, sisters Mary Hanebuth and Susan Cartwright.

She is survived by her sister, Hazel Lanctot of San Antonio, Texas, daughter Denise Callahan and husband Mike of Bertram, Texas, son Daniel Boobar of Austin, Texas, five grandchildren, Chris Callahan and wife Amber, Ryan Callahan and wife Jasmine, Lisa Callahan Sanchez and husband Isaac, Megan Boobar, Shawn Boobar and wife, Jenna, great grandchildren, Holly Applegate and husband Ross, Kelly Callahan, Jax Callahan and Cecilia (CC) Callahan and great-great grandson Brooks Applegate and a great many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Callahan Care Solutions, Bertram Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and New Century Hospice and all the nurses and caregivers associated with them for the compassionate and exceptional care they showed our family and Sara under their precious watch.

The family plans a private service, and her final resting place will be with John back in Minnesota where they began their lives together. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, the Gentiva Foundation, or a Hospice of your choice.
