Sara Elizabeth Grindlay of Scappoose passed away on July 6 at the age of 84 after a long illness. She was cared for by her devoted group of wonderful caregivers.
Sara was born in Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC on April 2, 1941, the daughter of Elizabeth Ellis and Dr. John Happer Grindlay. She was predeceased by her infant son, Martin Scott Campbell, in 1969.
Growing up in the country around Rochester, Minnesota, Sara discovered her love of animals, first her pony, Princess, then her horse Dr IQ junior, followed by many dogs, and later in life, her two cats, Sammy and Sadie. She was an avid traveler, loved good books, and had a keen appreciation of beauty that ranged from "finds" at local crafts fairs, to the views of the distant mountains from her front yard.
Sara received her bachelor of arts degree from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts in 1963 and master of arts and sciences degrees in education from the National College of Education in Evanston, Illinois, and Portland State University, respectively. She went on to become a much-loved teacher of elementary school age children with disabilities or troubled homes. After living in Denver, Colorado, she moved to the East Coast in North Scituate, Massachusetts, and later to the Portland area where she resided for the past twenty or more years.
Sara is survived by her sister, Lorna Grindlay Moore of Denver, Colorado, brother Jonathan Ellis Grindlay of Lincoln, Massachusetts, and an extended family that includes many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
