Mrs. Sara Jean Husemann, 91, of Coatsburg, IL, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2026, at her home.
Sara was born August 16, 1934, in Quincy, IL, the daughter of Roy and Eleanor (Wittler) Moellring. She married Ronald J. Husemann on June 16, 1956, at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Fowler, IL. He preceded her in death on May 4, 2018.
Sara was educated at Richland one-room school, Maplewood High School, and Western Illinois Teachers College. She earned her Master's degree from Western Illinois University. Mrs. Husemann taught for 35 years at Pleasant Hill, Mendon Unity, and Camp Point Central, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students while teaching Home Economics, Science, and PE.
Sara’s heart for service extended far beyond the classroom. She was a 50-year member of the Paloma Unit of Home and Community Education (HCE), where she served as unit president, county chairman, district director, and state vice president. Her leadership and dedication strengthened both friendships and communities across the region.
She was also deeply committed to youth development, serving for many years as a 4-H leader and being honored as 4-H Leader of the Year. Many 4-Hers were introduced to the world of sewing and food preparation through Sara’s patient instruction.
Sara generously shared her love of education and history by spearheading the Adams County Retired Teachers’ One-Room Schoolhouse project to relocate the Union School to the Old Tyme land at the Adams County Fairgrounds, bringing the one-room schoolhouse experience to life for countless children and visitors since 2006. She took great pride in preserving local history and in teaching others about the value of learning and community.
A lifelong woman of faith, Sara was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Coatsburg for nearly 70 years serving on many committees, teaching Bible school, quilting, and preparing school, health, and layette kits for Lutheran World Relief. She was an active member of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELCA).
Sara was a devoted supporter of the Community for Christ Assistance Center, where she served on the board and volunteered countless hours in the Thrift Store. For the last decade, Sara traveled to Quincy every Friday to pick up food donations for the center.
Sara’s pride and joy was family, and she was happiest with a grandchild or great-grandchild on her lap. She was an avid gardener and found great joy in preserving the fruits of her labor. She loved to cook, bake, and share her bounty with others. Sara was known for providing opportunities and encouraging others to volunteer in the community. You could expect to see her involved in the organization and food preparation for many community events, most notably making the famous potato salad for the Paloma Fiesta.
Surviving are her children, Warren (Julia) Husemann of Coatsburg, IL, Wayne (Kathy) Husemann of O’Fallon, IL, Ronda (Randy) Frese of Paloma, IL, Rosalie (Philip) Chadderdon of East Galesburg, IL, and John (Roberta) Husemann of LaGrange Park, IL; her grandchildren, Nicole (Jeff) Shields, Kristen (Brett) Obert, Kimberly (Lucas) Ervin, Tate (Hannah) Husemann, Anna (Cameron) Harris, Dirk Husemann, Laura (Brian) Kennedy, Jana (Daniel) Brookshier, Sara Frese, Amanda (Patrick) Malone, Nathan (Madeleine) Chadderdon, Kathryn (Alexander) Castor, Hannah Husemann, Isaac (Laura) Husemann, and Elise Husemann; her great-grandchildren, Laina and Lucy Shields, Oliver Kamprath, Rosalee and Thomas Ervin, Jackson, Evie and Lewis Husemann, Emmett and Halle Harris, Hank and Gene Brookshier, Willa Frese, and Lillian Castor; her brothers, Henry (Judith) Moellring and Melvin (Kasandra) Moellring; and several nieces and nephews.
