Sara Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bennie Smith Funeral Home - Wilmington on Feb. 16, 2026.
Sara Smith was born on February 12, 1925, to John and Josephine Smith. She was the oldest of seven children. Sara gained her angel wings on February 4, 2026, in Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware.

Sara had a love for learning, and she received her early education at Public School 21, located at 10th and Kirkwood Streets.

She dedicated many years of her professional career to working for former Wilmington Mayor H. G. Haskell, Sr., demonstrating her commitment to public service and significant contributions to the local community.

Sara was a devoted member of Ezion Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. She was also a long-time member of Haven United Methodist Church, where she had an active role in church activities, including serving as Superintendent of Sunday School, a member of the Finance Committee, and singing in the Senior, Gospel, and Mass Choirs. When Haven closed, she joined Mother African Union Church, where she engaged with fellow members, fostering connections and providing support.

She enjoyed reading her Bible, playing bingo, and doing word search puzzles. Sara was always ready to sing a solo, and most of all, to sing with the choir. She enjoyed going on outings with the Elders Ministry. She was well known for her family gatherings, with her potato salad and sweet potato pies always being the crowd favorites.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Josephine Smith; her sons, John and Terrance; siblings: George Smith, Marquerite Jackson, Edward Smith, Lorraine Meek, Phyllis Sampson, and Albert Smith.

She leaves to cherish her memories her children: Caroline, Alberee, and Bernard; eight grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren, and a great-great-great-grandchild due in March; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
