Her journey began November 11, 1924 in Los Angeles, California. Sarah was the second child of Andrés and Concepción Gonzales. She went to heaven on July 23, 2024 with her family around her.
Living a full life of 99 years, she will be missed immensely. She was a first-class hostess, cooking meals like pot roast with mashed potatoes or rice and beans with cheese enchiladas which her family enjoyed. Beans were a staple in our home and even served on Thanksgiving. Our home was a place where people would gather. We have wonderful memories gathering together with our church family. We enjoyed champurrado, capirotada, and buñuelos for the holidays. Family and friends became the focal point of so many special occasions like birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers and holiday gatherings with our Mom at the helm of the kitchen and preparations. So many fun times with warm memories!
Mom gave 100% to the things at hand and was a teacher to her five daughters on how to deep clean a house and share what we had and be a friend.
As we all grew up, married, and moved away Mom and Dad became very involved with local Bible studies and made new friendships with such a global group of people who loved Jesus. Often, they would meet with couples and encourage and pray over them regarding their marriage and relationship.
As the grandkids came into the picture, Mom enjoyed preparing the house for their time together. There was food, games, movies so she could give her attention to them and not be distracted. We thought it was interesting to see how Mom would permit them to do things and eat food that we were not allowed to have. The joy of being a grandparent!
Mom's relationship with Jesus was strong and she shared that with her family and friends. Her life and words were an example of her faith. There was a season when we would attend Melodyland in Anaheim for an extra boost of teaching and learning the Bible with a multitude of other Followers of Christ. Exciting times!
The life of Sarah Portugal had its challenges and victories, like all of us here. She was sustained by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the power of prayer. In these last years, as her energy slowed down and she would be sitting in her chair gazing out the window, we would ask her, "what are you doing Mom?" she would say, "I'm praying." She was a prayer warrior for all of those she loved. She is survived by 4 daughters and one son in love, 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 3 great great children.
We Love You Mom. We will join you in heaven one day!
Proverbs 31:31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
