Scott Bernards Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home - Forest Grove on Dec. 9, 2025.
Scott Anthony Bernards, 61, a lifelong resident of the Hillsboro community passed away on December 1, 2025.

Scott was born in Hillsboro on October 20, 1964 as the second of three children to John and Marilyn (Herinckx) Bernards. He attended Glencoe High School and graduated with the class of 1983.

Scott met his future wife, Rose Linn, in the Mt. Hood Community College Forestry program in 1986. The two spent time together as the President and Vice President of the program - forming a budding connection over a shared admiration for the beauty of Oregon's environment. Scott paused his initial studies and received his Bachelor's degree many years later through George Fox University. He and Rose were united in marriage in 1990 and purchased their first home together in Hillsboro – taking ownership of and starting their journey in Scott's childhood home. Together, they had five children; Beth, A.J., Mikaela, John and Drew.

Scott worked for Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation for more than 30 years before accepting a job with the City of Newport on the Oregon coast. The role meant four days a week away from home, but he enjoyed the location and the pace of working at the beach, while contributing to the Newport community. He loved to be home for his three-day weekends - especially for the chance to dote on and babysit his granddaughter Amelia on Fridays.

Scott enjoyed coaching and watching his children's grade school and high school sports endeavors. He was an avid Oregon State athletics fan - catching many a game over the radio. He enjoyed being outdoors for both work and his personal time. He spent time camping, hiking, taking day trips and teaching his children to fish for trout. He loved to tinker and build with his hands over many hours and projects in the garage. Scott and Rose cherished hosting monthly family dinners for their adult children, where Scott assumed the role of family grill master. Scott was a devout Catholic, often serving as a Eucharistic minister and fashioning and donating countless rosaries over many years, a skill he learned from his mom.

He is preceded in passing by his parents, John and Marilyn.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rose, their five children and spouses; Beth Bernards and Brennan Smith of the East Coast, A.J. and Celia Bernards of Tigard, Mikaela and Adam Genskay of Oregon City, John and AnnaMaria Bernards of Alaska, and Drew Bernards of Hillsboro. He is also survived by older brother, Roger and Wendy Bernards of Albany and their children; Megan, Emily and Joe, younger sister, Annette and Patrick Lyne of Beaverton and their daughter Emily, granddaughter Amelia, as well as several of Rose's family members.
