Scott Gill Obituary

Scott R. Gill, 60, of Avon, CT, beloved husband to Kathleen (Randall), passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Lansing, MI, son of Sheryl Gill (Tomc) of Onekama, MI and the late Gerald Gill, Scott was raised in Columbia, MD and Oreland, PA and earned his BS in Business Administration from Robert Morris University. Scott began his career with Reliance Surety Co. in 1985 and became the VP for the New England Region at the merger with Travelers. He was head of Field Management for Bond and Specialty Insurance for 12 years, and in 2012 was named Chief Operating Officer of Travelers International. Scott's colleagues knew him as a generous, kind, trusted, and selfless person always willing to offer his time or advice. He was known for his strong work ethic, his sense of humor, and his coaching and mentoring skills. As a confidante to many, Scott was often sought out for his counsel and problem-solving abilities. He was an exemplary role model and highly effective leader, always striving to bring out the best in everyone. Scott met Kathy, the love of his life, on a fortuitous blind date in Boston. The second date came soon thereafter, followed by dinners in the North End, ski trips to Killington, Celtics games, and weekend walks around the city. They were married for 27 beautiful years. Scott had many talents; he could fix anything and engineer a solution for any "project". He was a skilled chef who enjoyed cooking for a crowd with his motto being "go big or go home." Scott also enjoyed spending time outdoors--golfing, fishing, snow skiing, boating, and water skiing. He loved being around water, especially making s'mores on the shores of Lake Michigan, watching July 4th fireworks on Cobbetts Pond in NH, and fishing on Krouse Lake in Onekama. Holidays were special for Scott; he relished planning and cooking Thanksgiving dinner, spoiling his children on Christmas morning, and coming home early on Halloween to set up his elaborate graveyard display to the delight of his children (and the neighborhood). Above all, Scott's greatest pleasure was spending time with his family, cherishing his children's milestones and accomplishments and supporting his wife Kathy in all her endeavors. He imparted his values to Caroline and Brendan through many "dad coaching moments," encouraging them to work hard and strive for success, while still staying humble. He taught them how to ski and to fish, how to play soccer and golf, and most importantly how to "play in the sandbox." Many memorable family moments were spent at Red Sox games, Travelers Golf Championships, trips to Club Med, Mackinac Island, and Europe, and viewing sunsets on the lake. Scott valued his faith and was strengthened by it; he lived by example, setting high standards for himself and his children. He was a communicant of the Church of Saint Ann, an active member of Legatus, and a strong supporter of Catholic education. His good nature, infectious laugh, and generous heart will be dearly missed. Besides his wife Kathleen and mother Sheryl, he leaves his daughter Caroline M. Gill and his son Brendan G. Gill, both of Boston, MA; two brothers, Michael Gill (Donna) of Orlando, FL and Steven Gill (Stephanie) of Whitehall, MD. He also leaves his aunt and godmother, Judy Trinklein, of Onekama, MI, numerous brothers/sisters in-law, and many nieces and nephews. His family will receive friends on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 4-7 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 5, 2023, 10 AM at the Church of Saint Ann, 289 Arch Road, Avon. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery. Contributions in Scott's memory may be made to the Church of Saint Ann where the Scott R. Gill Scholarship Fund will be established for Catholic education. The holidays are here and as we celebrate the birth of christ with our family's, my thoughts and prayers go out to Scott's family on this day . He was a great man and is surely missed.
I try to remember some of the good times we all shared one that comes to mind was kayaking down the Platte river to lake Michigan ,then having a picnic and swimming afterwards. Those summer days in michigan are really special memories. Love and miss you brother.

Scott was one of the few people at work who didn't care what level you were or what you could do for him. He was all about the people and the place. He made you feel like your wants/needs mattered and always offered up professional advice/support with a smile on his face.

I was deeply saddened when i heard of his diagnosis and in turn, his passing. He was a great man and he will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear about Scott´s illness and his untimely passing. Scott was a true professional, committed to his work and to the company, but always with a twinkle in his eye. He was a great support to me personally, with a wealth of experience and a solution to every problem. He was generous with his time, and nothing was too much trouble. May his memory be a blessing.

Scott brought the perfect blend of professionalism, dedication and a fun loving spirit to what he did. He made me exceptionally welcome when I began my career at Travelers and his support was always there.

His passing is a tragic loss to the Place and to his family, especially, of an exceptionally honourable and loyal individual.

My deepest condolences.

My interaction with Scott dates back to the late 80's and continued to the early 2000's. He reported to me at Reliance Surety as a Bond Manager and Regional Manager, then as a Regional VP when we were purchased by Travelers. We spent countless hours together discussing bid and final bonds, going to agent and client meetings and doing performance reviews. He was very technically astute underwriter and was excellent with agents and contractors. I always considered him one of my favorites. When he spoke of Kathy and later his children it was always with pride and love. I was shocked to hear of his passing. When I retired nearly 10 years ago he wrote me a beautiful note thanking me for helping him along his career. I still have that note. Be assured Scott was a difference maker in this world. Rest in peace my friend

Kathy and Scott were always so warm and welcoming at TLC to us personally and as a colleague Scott was a fount of knowledge and wisdom. Scott always had a funny comment or interesting perspective on any issue and was willing to get involved and help in any way he could, even joining our Exec meetings in the middle of the night for him! Travelers Europe will miss his guiding hand and common sense. His experience and connections came from his commitment to the place and the commitment that he engendered in others. We have lost an incredibly valuable and irreplaceable member of our team and will miss him deeply. We can only imagine the loss that his family must feel. Hopefully Kathy and family will understand the respect and love that his colleagues had for him and get some comfort knowing how valued and admired he was. What a lovely man.
Our deepest condolences.

Kathy, Rick and I send our sincere condolences for your loss of Scott. He was a kind, generous man and so loved his family. I remember his manning the grill on July 4ths while everyone was laughing and enjoying the day around him. And he did have a great laugh himself! For medical reasons (I had a minor procedure today), I won´t be able to make it tomorrow, but I will try to connect with you up at Cobbett´s. Please take care. Corinne and Rick

Scott was a great colleague and friend. As a key member of the Travelers Canada Senior Leadership Team, he leaves a lasting impression on Travelers, our business and all the colleagues he worked with.
He was a kind, generous man with a strong work ethic and a love of family. As someone who always strived to bring out the best in everyone, he was an exemplary leader, mentor and coach, and was often sought out for counsel and support. He will be dearly missed.
I will look to honour Scott´s memory by ensuring I take the time to make memories with my family and friends - which was something he truly enjoyed and cherished. Scott often spoke about Kathy, Caroline and Brandon as well as his mother. He loved them tremendously and was extremely proud of all their accomplishments.
Sending my warmest condolences and deepest sympathy to his family.

I had the pleasure of working with Scott on a few different assignments over the last 8 years at Travelers. I was always impressed with Scott's calm nature in the face of turmoil, and his knack for asking the right questions at the right time. He was a leader who modeled the way for others each day, formally and/or informally. And while he had deep knowledge about the business, I will remember Scott most for how much he cared about the people. May he rest in peace.

Kathy, Brendan, Caroline and all of the Gill family,
my deepest condolences. I had the pleasure of working with Scott for ten years.
When Hurricane Isaias knocked out power at my home, Scott quickly called me up to offer the use of his freezer knowing I was worried about storing our newborn´s milk supply. When I had issues with home repair he was quick to provide advice, experience, and contacts to help. When I needed help on how to navigate an issue at work, he offered ideas and practical solutions. He was a problem solver. He was thoughtful, passionate, and, most importantly, he had a big heart. I am going to miss our Chief Diplomat.
I wish you peace during this difficult time knowing that Scott positively impacted countless people and will be missed.

Scott has been a valued mentor and trusted advisor for several years. Whenever I desired guidance, insight or perspective, he made himself available. Regardless of the topic of discussion, he demonstrated genuine curiosity and was generous with gratitude and praise. He was an advocate, a champion and someone to emulate. He made time for the things that were important to him--first and foremost his family, of whom he was extremely proud. I already miss him.

Kathy, Brendan, Caroline,

While I only had the opportunity to support Scott for a short while, it felt as though I had known him forever. We shared many conversations about life, family, religion etc. He was such a genuine man whose kindness always shined through.

Scott was so brave; 2 Timothy 4:7; "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Fighting the good fight of the faith is also about perseverance and continuing, even when the road is hard.

Prayers of Strength and healing.

Scott made my college years some of the best years of my life. He made everything more fun. He was my best friend in a fedora! We attended most of our fraternity´s events together and he always wore his fedora and when we encountered friends, his line was "s´up" it was the Scott Gill greeting. Kathy, Caroline, Brendan and Sheryl, I am so very sorry for your loss. God bless.

Scott was a business partner of mine at Travelers and was a joy to work with. Each time we would have a meeting, Scott thoughtfully asked about my family, any vacation plans, or anything going on in my life. He was caring, generous with his time and attention, and made you feel respected. The Travelers family will miss him dearly. Sending healing thoughts and condolences to his family and loved ones he always spoke so proudly of.

I've worked for Scott for the past few years. In my 30+ year career, I've met no other senior leader like him. He truly truly cared about all of us. I could talk to him about anything and knew that not only would he guide me in the right direction (both personally and in my career), he would do everything in his power to help support all of us. He was subtle in his approach and kind with his words always. There is a big hole in my heart. I can't imagine the loss your family is feeling. My prayers and condolences during this time.

Kathy, Caroline and Brendan, I´m so sorry for your loss. Scott was a tremendous leader and friend. It was a pleasure working for him when I was the Seattle RVP. He was truly the perfect guy to oversee Bond field operations and had to be the adult in the room at times :) Using Scott´s words we could be "rather sophomoric" when getting together as a group. God bless and know that I´ll be praying for your collective strength in the coming days.
