Scott Hemer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McNearney - Schmidt Funeral and Cremation on Feb. 8, 2026.
Scott Douglas Hemer, age 57, of Shakopee, MN, passed away on January 30, 2026.

Scott grew up in Woodbury, MN, where he attended high school and excelled in both academics and sports, including football and alpine ski racing, forming many lasting friendships along the way. His intense thirst for knowledge led him to attend Carleton College, Hamline University School of Law and the University of St. Thomas, where he earned degrees from each, built deep friendships, and engaged in countless thoughtful conversations.

Scott was a man whose intensity, humor, and enormous heart left an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew him. He lived life with contagious enthusiasm-whether he was coaching little league and tracking stats like a major-league manager, leading camping trips filled with laughter and adventure, or convincing a scared kid on a fishing boat to be brave in only the way Scott could. He loved his gear, his gadgets, and especially his knives-always prepared for any situation and was always eager to share the excitement of whatever new thing he had discovered. His intelligence was staggering-an economics degree, law school and an MBA completed together, and a CFA passed on the first try-yet he carried it with a humility that made conversations with him a joy.

But above all, Scott loved his people. His family was his world, and he cared for his friends and their families with genuine devotion. His laugh-sometimes innocent, sometimes mischievous-filled rooms and became part of the memories that all who loved him now hold close. Recently baptized and building a future grounded in faith, Scott lived with commitment, passion, and heart in everything he did. He was a loyal friend, a loving father, a continual learner, and a man who made life fuller, funnier, and richer simply by being in it. He will be deeply missed.

Scott struggled with the disease of alcoholism for the last several years of his life. Sometimes he did spectacularly well and sometimes he did not do well at all, and we loved him through it all.

Scott is survived by sons Wally and Charlie Hemer, father Doug (Paula) Hemer, brother Jeff (Amy) Hemer, nephews Drew, Owen and Eric Hemer, and extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Donna.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 21 at McNearney Schmidt Funeral Home in Shakopee, MN. Visitation is at 3:30 pm and the service begins at 4:00 pm.
