Scott Keels Obituary
Kinston, North Carolina
Scott Walter Keels reeled in his final catch on Friday December 5, 2025. Born on February 19, 1956, in Wilmington, NC, he clocked out gracefully at the age of 69 in Greenville, NC. Cause of departure was Natural, just like his love for the great outdoors.
Scott was a proud graduate of New Hanover High School, class of 1974, where he likely spent more time daydreaming about fishing than anything else. After school, he dove headfirst into the printing industry, lending his talents to Federal Paper Company and Shorewood Packaging. If you ever received a perfectly packaged product, you may have Scott to thank.
A true son of the sea, Scott cherished every moment by the ocean, casting lines both literally and metaphorically. His passion for fishing was only rivaled by his love for family, friends, and, of course, his loyal companion, Taz the dog.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Phyllis Womack Keels, his parents Robert Stewart Keels and Miriam Ethel Hines Keels, and his brother-in-laws Alan Lion and Sandy Hart. They've surely already found the best fishing spots up there.
In this world, Scott leaves behind a lineage as strong as a well-tied fishing knot. He is survived by his devoted children, Scott Adrian Keels (wife Kari) and Megan K. Smith (husband Brian), their mother Joyce Schwarzmeier, and his treasured grandchildren Grace, Hailey, and Barron. His brothers Stewart Keels (wife Jayne) and Darryl Keels (wife Tracey), sisters Jean K. Lion and Barbara K. Hart, several Nephews and Nieces. His family would like to give thanks to his special friend and caregiver Tish Jordan.
In honor of Scott's deep-rooted connection to the ocean, a memorial service will be held in the spring. His ashes will be scattered in the sea, ensuring that he's always close to the waves he so dearly loved.
While the fish may breathe a sigh of relief, we'll all feel the absence of his wit, his warmth, and that unmistakable twinkle in his eye. Rest easy, Scott, and may the waters always be calm and full of fish.
