Scott Douglas Miller – better known to many as writer and musician Misop Baynun – died March 31 at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital after suffering a heart attack during a car fire in Hanson, Mass. He was 56.
Baynun lived most of his life in Quincy, and dedicated his days to a few things: music, baseball and God, three passions that bring people together and that brought him a lifetime of friendships and joy.
All of those passions started early for Scott, who pursued his childhood dreams of playing professional baseball well beyond his school days at North Quincy High School, his musical ambitions to the very last days of his life and whose love of the Lord will go on forever.
He was an active member of the Boston Metro Baseball League – where he played over 100 innings per year even as he entered his mid-50s -- known for being a pitcher "with the most unique delivery you've ever seen."
He played his last musical gig on March 20 at The Cave at the Red Lion Inn in Cohasset with a three-piece group – Misop Baynun & The Long Cats -- he put together just for that show "with a sound as unpredictable as their humor."
For years, he was a regular leader for Bible Study groups across the South Shore – but mostly in North Quincy with groups meeting at a local Panera Bread restaurant -- and he had particularly been enjoying becoming part of the community at Calvary Baptist Church, which he joined after his recent move from Quincy to Pembroke.
Misop Baynun – Scott adopted the name legally about two decades ago – was a prolific writer, both of music and books and travelogues. His faith was evident in "Israel's Homecoming" and "Throngs of Iniquity," books that you can read on his www.magpro.com website. His prodigious humor and musical talent can be found in his recordings – available on the same website – where he brings an authenticity to the blues, playing the guitar and singing while also playing the drums with his feet.
Scott is survived by his mother Sandy and brother Jeff, both of Quincy, as well as cousins Jona, Bruce and Robert Hiltunen. He was predeceased by his father Bruce Miller.
In lieu of flowers, Scott / Misap would have been honored if you supported his last favorite cause, Calvary Baptist Church in Hanson, which you can do directly at P.O. Box 510, Hanson, MA 02341or online at https://connecttocalvary.com/give.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 19 at Calvary Baptist Church, 429 Monponsett St. in Hanson. Friends and family will gather to meet and share memories before the service begins at 11:30 a.m.; a luncheon will follow.
