Sean Byrd, age 48, of Altapass Trail in Spruce Pine, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Duke University Hospital in Durham.

Born on March 27, 1977 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Joseph Franklin Byrd and Marsha Gail Jones who still survives.

Sean was a member of Spruce Pine First Baptist Church, a member of the Spruce Pine Volunteer Fire Department and an Eagle Scout. He was a gun smith and had been previously employed by Burleson Plumbing and Heating in Spruce Pine. He adored his corgi, Maggie, he loved to go fishing and tying fishing flies, hunting and cooking on the grill. He also enjoyed shopping, game night with family, working on his lowrider and spending time with his loved ones.

Left to cherish his memories are his mother and step father; Gail and Robert Jones of Spruce Pine, his sister; Lisa Gardner and husband, Dustin of Spruce Pine, his son; Caleb Byrd and significant other, Cheyenne Carico of Wilson, NC, his niece; Hannah McCurry and significant other, Gus Schabilion of Bakersville; his nephew; Collin Gardner of Spruce Pine, and his fiancé; Jessica Buchanan and her daughters Maddy and Lily Buchanan of Bakersville.

The funeral service for Sean Byrd will be on Monday, August 18, 2025 at 6:30 pm at the Spruce Pine Fire Department with Rev. Steve Williams and Dr. Rocky Branch officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, August 18, 2025 from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm at the Spruce Pine Fire Department. Graveside services and interment will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at McKinney Gap Cemetery with honors provided by the Fireman's Association Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to: Sean Byrd Memorial Fund at United Community Bank, Spruce Pine, NC 28777 (checks need to be made payable to: Lisa Gardner). These donations will be donated in Sean's memory to Duke Transplant Assistance program which assist low-income families with transplants.

The family would like to extend a 'Special Heartfelt Thank You' to the 7-West Cardiac ICU at Duke University Hospital for their wonderful care of Sean.
