Sean William Wallace, 58, passed away on Feb. 22, 2025, at Doctors' Community Hospital in Lanham, Maryland after a courageous battle with metastatic cancer.
Sean was born on Sept. 14, 1966, in Pasadena, Texas. He grew up in a military family, experiencing life in various locations around the world where his father was stationed. From Oxon Hill, Maryland, to Taipei, Taiwan; Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Nuremberg, Germany; Newport News, Virginia; and finally, San Antonio, Texas. Each place shaped his perspective and left a lasting impression. He spoke fondly of his time in Germany and Newport News and formed lifelong friendships along the way.
Sean was a gifted writer, and his intelligence and sharp wit made him a natural storyteller. He carried these qualities throughout his life. His gift for storytelling emerged at an early age when he began writing newspaper articles, for his own enjoyment, about sporting events he had watched on television. He continued to develop his writing skills by working on both his high school and university newspapers.
Sean graduated from James Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas, in 1984 before earning a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) in 1993. He launched his professional career in journalism working as a sportswriter and copy editor at the San Antonio Light while still enrolled in college. During his long and distinguished career as a journalist, he contributed to numerous daily and weekly newspapers across Texas, Illinois, Washington D.C., and Maryland. For the last decade of his career, he served as the Assistant Editor of The Daily Record in Baltimore, Maryland.
Beyond journalism, Sean was known for his intelligence, generosity, quick wit, and incredible knowledge of movies, television shows and music. He was always available to help a friend or colleague. His kindness and warmth left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Whether engaging in deep conversations or sharing a clever remark, he had a way of making people feel valued and understood.
A devoted sports fan, Sean followed the New Jersey Devils hockey team, Arizona Cardinals football, Texas State football, Cleveland Guardians baseball, as well as the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders. His enthusiasm for sports was matched only by his love of music. Sean had a profoundly eclectic taste in music. One moment he would be listening to a ballad by George Strait and the next he would be blasting Iron Maiden at top volume. He found great joy in attending concerts by some of his favorite bands such as Rush, Iron Maiden, Ghost, and Solar Federation. He felt blessed to see his favorite band, Rush, 43 times throughout his lifetime.
Sean is survived by his beloved wife, Knetha McCord Wallace; his mother, Marilyn Wallace; his siblings Kelly Wallace (Leslie); Kristi Kjendalen (John); Shannon Senna; Brandon Wallace and 11 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Wayne Wallace, and his brother-in-law Joe Senna.
A memorial service to honor Sean's life will be held on March 15, 2025, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM at Lasting Tributes, located at 814 Bestgate Road in Annapolis, Maryland. To honor Sean's long career as a sports journalist and devoted sports fan, attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite team's jersey or T-shirt.
Sean's memory will live on through the stories he told and the lives he touched.
