Selma M. Freedman

Our mother, Selma M. Freedman of Portsmouth, NH and Boynton Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 6th with her loving family at her side in North Andover, MA. Selma was born on July 4, 1932 to Annie (Zacks) and Morris Klaiman in Lawrence MA. She loved that the entire country celebrated her birthday every year. She graduated from Lawrence, HS and attended Boston University. She went on a blind date with Robert Freedman which she said afterwards was just alright and nothing special. That nothing special became 58 years of wonderful marriage until Robbie's death in 2009.
They lived in Exeter for a brief time and then moved to Portsmouth where they had 3 sons. She was active in her boys' schooling and other activities. She was a room mother and chauffer for little league baseball, music lessons, and Hebrew school.
When the boys were older she worked in the family business, George & Phillips in Exeter, NH. As the years went by, Robbie and Selma wintered in Florida where they met many new friends and Selma could always find a good Mah Jong game. They travelled to many countries around the world with friends and family. She loved family gatherings and traditions.
Selma was a member of Temple Israel, Portsmouth and of the Sisterhood.
Selma was predeceased by her husband Robert, and eldest son Mark. She is survived by her son Alan and wife Debbie of Andover, MA, son Bert and wife Deb of Portsmouth, daughter In-law Judy Jacobs of Toronto and 5 grandchildren : Lauren and husband John Healy and great grandson Carter, Nathan and wife Kristina Freedman, Michael Freedman, Sarah and husband Chad Heal and great granddaughter Lillibet, and Elena Freedman as well as special nieces Sandy and Barbie.
Funeral will be Friday, November 7th at 11:30am at the Temple Israel Cemetery on Banfield Road in Portsmouth, NH. Donations in her memory can be made to Temple Israel Operating Endowment Fund 200 State Street Portsmouth, NH 03801. Shiva will be held on Sunday, November 9th at her granddaughter's residence at 26 Taft Road Portsmouth, NH from 5:30pm to 7:30pm with a service at 6pm.
